Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged the National Institute for Policy
\nand Strategic Studies (NIPSS) to unlock the mystery of failed or poorly
\nimplemented policies and projects in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Osinbajo\u2019s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in statement on Monday in Abuja,
\nsaid that the vice president stated this when he virtually inaugurated
\nthe Senior Executive Course 43 of NIPSS.<\/p>\n
The theme of the Course 43 programme is \u201cGetting Things Done: Strategies
\nfor the Implementation of Policies and Programmes in Nigeria.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, your task is already well cut out for you. Perhaps Course 43 will
\nbe able to unlock the mystery of failed or poorly implemented policies
\nand projects, but more importantly, promote a practical, nitty-gritty
\nguide to implementing projects and policies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a body of knowledge that is desperately needed today. This
\nyear\u2019s theme goes to the heart of what is generally considered the bane
\nof development in Nigeria; poor implementation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe proverbial gap between intention and results; between policy and
\nstated outcomes; delivering on campaign promises or even just doing what
\nthe well-articulated policy papers say.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor many serious-minded policymakers, the frustration is the same, yes
\nwe know all about think-tanks, what we need now are do-tanks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Osinbajo commended the commitment and contributions of NIPSS to critical
\nnational issues through policy briefs, policy advice and other strategic
\ninterventions.<\/p>\n
He assured staff, participants and management of the Federal
\nGovernment\u2019s continued support to the institution especially in the
\nupgrade of facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile Government will continue to do its best to support the National
\nInstitute, I should stress that budgetary provisions alone will always
\nbe limited given competing needs and responsibilities of government.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is therefore imperative for NIPSS to be even more pro-active and
\ncreative in seeking alternative sources of funding,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
Osinbajo commiserated with the management and staff of NIPSS on the
\ndemise of its Director-General, Prof. Habu Galadima.<\/p>\n
He recalled the late Galadima\u2019s work and dedication particularly to the
\ngrowth of the institute, describing him as a passionate advocate for the
\ntransformation of the Institute.<\/p>\n
Participants of Senior Executive Course 43 were drawn from the private
\nsector, the public service, including paramilitary organisations and the
\narmed forces.<\/p>\n
Present at the event were Plateau State Governor, Mr Simon Lalong,
