Benue\u2019s Gov. Samuel Ortom on Thursday commended President Muhammadu
\nBuhari over his directive to security operatives to shoot on sight,
\nanyone illegally in possession AK47 rifles.<\/p>\n
Ortom gave the commendation in Makurdi when the Chairman, Governing
\nBoard, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Prof. Adamu Kyuka,
\npaid him a courtesy visit.<\/p>\n
President Buhari on Wednesday ordered security operatives to shoot on
\nsight anyone carrying AK47 rifles illegally in the country.<\/p>\n
Ortom said the president\u2019s order would reduce criminality, banditry and
\nmilitia herders\u2019 attacks in Benue communities as well as in other parts
\nof the country.<\/p>\n
According to the governor, the order will also make the communities
\nsafer for displaced farmers to return to their ancestral homes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI commend Mr President for his recent order against those bearing AK47
\nrifles.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis I am sure will reduce the high rate of criminality, banditry and
\nmilitia herdsmen attacks on our farming communities,\u2019\u2019 the governor
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He stressed that President Buhari had done the right thing by listening
\nto calls by concerned Nigerians on the need for the Federal Government
\nto act faster and decisively to save the country from degenerating into
\nanarchy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t only criticise. I also commend where necessary. And I want to
\nsay shame on those sycophants who were bashing me for writing to Mr
\nPresident because he has finally heeded my advice,\u2019\u2019 the governor noted.<\/p>\n
Ortom said Nigeria belongs to all her citizens and only justice and
\nequity anchored on the rule of law could guarantee the unity and
\nstability of the country.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Prof. Kyuda commended the Benue government for judiciously
\napplying funds accruing to the state for education.<\/p>\n
Kyuda said he was impressed with the new face of primary schools in the
\nstate, adding that education is germane to every development.<\/p>\n
He said that from available records Benue teachers were very qualified
\nand the governor should engage additional quality teachers.<\/p>\n
Kyuda expressed regret that the harsh economic situation in the country
\noccasioned by COVID-19, made the Federal Government to withdraw N20
\nbillion from UBEC\u2019s budget for 2021.<\/p>\n
The chairman also appealed to Nigerian governors to look for alternative
\nways of revenue generation for developmental purposes. (NAN)<\/p>\n
