{"id":79113,"date":"2021-03-10T15:17:06","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T14:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=79113"},"modified":"2021-03-10T15:17:06","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T14:17:06","slug":"u-s-lawmakers-to-introduce-antitrust-bills-to-protect-news-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/u-s-lawmakers-to-introduce-antitrust-bills-to-protect-news-media\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. lawmakers to introduce antitrust bills to protect news media"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1693851751281976313\" class=\"mail-message \">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\">A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers led by Senator Amy Klobuchar and Representative David Cicilline introduce legislation on Wednesday aimed at making it easier for news organisations to negotiate collectively with platforms like Google.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1693853707658876069\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nThe bill came not long after Facebook had a pitched battle with Australia\u00a0over how much publishers should make from their social media<br \/>\npages.<\/p>\n<p>During the fight, Facebook blacked out Australian news pages and only restored\u00a0them as the government granted concessions.<\/p>\n<p>It also promised a one-billion-dollar investment in the news industry.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Kennedy and Rep. Ken Buck, both Republicans said they wouldalso sponsor the bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKlobucar and Cicilline are both Democrats.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The measure would allow print, broadcast, or digital news organisations to\u00a0work together to win better deals from Facebook and Alphabet Inc\u2019s<br \/>\nGoogle during a four-year period.<\/p>\n<p>This would happen when they were not subjected to antitrust laws.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would require the negotiations to aid news publishers generally rather\u00a0than a small number.<\/p>\n<p>Klobuchar said she was optimistic about the possibility of the measure\u2019s becoming\u00a0law because of the growing concern of lawmakers from both<br \/>\nparties about monopolies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTech has no mercy,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the bills would allow negotiations on \u201ceverything from advertising\u00a0revenue to access to information on subscribers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted that most people now get their news online through Facebook and\u00a0Google.<\/p>\n<p>Social media companies used the news to attract users and have been accused by news publishers of not sharing enough advertising revenue with\u00a0them.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation could boost revenues.<\/p>\n<p>The news industry was undeniably struggling, with employment at U.S. newspapers\u00a0down by half since 2008 amid tumbling advertising revenue and<br \/>\nchanging media habits, according to data from Pew Research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill will give hardworking local reporters and publishers the helping hand they need right now, so they can continue to do their important\u00a0work,\u201d Cicilline said.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller publishers using Google\u2019s ad sales technology had for years complained\u00a0about their bigger competitors getting more favourable<br \/>\nrevenue-sharing deals from the search giant.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives Judiciary antitrust panel, which Cicilline chairs, will hold a hearing on the matter on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In the Senate, Klobuchar introduced a broader bill in February aiming at strengthening\u00a0antitrust enforcers\u2019 ability to stop mergers by lowering<br \/>\nthe bar for stopping deals and increasing resources for enforcers.<\/p>\n<p>Cicilline was expected to introduce series of antitrust bills in the House.
