President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja called on the international
\ncommunity to further collaborate on tackling some of the major threats
\nacross the globe, which include terrorism, insurgency, displacement of
\npersons, and climate change, reiterating that the growing challenges
\npose real threat to human existence.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a ceremony for receiving Letters of Credence at the State
\nHouse, President Buhari urged diplomats to work towards building
\nstronger relations, with focus on providing joint solutions to rising
\nhuman and natural challenges.<\/p>\n
The President received letters of credence from High Commissioner of The
\nGambia, Mr Mohamadou Musa Njie, Ambassador of South Korea, Mr Kim
\nYoung-Chae, Ambassador of Slovak, Mr Tomas Felix, High Commissioner of
\nAustralia, Mr John Gerard Donnelly, High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Mr
\nMd. Masudur Rahman and Ambassador of Guinea Bissau, Dr Jaao Ribeiro
\nButiam Co.<\/p>\n
“I would like to lay emphasis on the need for us to come together to
\naddress and overcome our common challenges. Terrorism, Insurgency,
\nDisplacement of Persons, Climate Change, Population Explosion, Human
\nTrafficking, Corruption, Poverty, and Proliferation of Small Arms and
\nLight Weapons are all either the sources of conflict or results of it.<\/p>\n
“These challenges though on a diverse scale, threaten the existence of
\nhumanity and human relations. These challenges underscore the need for
\nthe international community to work together to collectively identify
\nappropriate measures to globally overcome these challenges,” he said.<\/p>\n
President Buhari told the envoys that the novel coronavirus pandemic
\nremains humanity’s greatest threat as it does not only affect public
\nhealth, but also has a devastating effect on people’s economy and
\nlivelihood.<\/p>\n
“Although countries around the world have commenced the vaccine rollout
\nagainst the pandemic, mitigating the spread of the virus and the impact
\nof its infection, remains\u00a0 cause for concern,” the President noted.<\/p>\n
President Buhari assured the new Ambassadors that Nigeria enjoys very
\ngood bilateral relations with each of their countries, and there was
\nneed to enhance the cordial relations for the joint benefit of citizens.<\/p>\n
“In addition to the fraternal relations between us, the one thing
\nNigeria has in common with your countries is peace. Peace is priceless,
\ndesirable and crucial to sustainable development and achieving the
\ntargets set by the UN global initiatives.<\/p>\n
“It is therefore imperative for us to work individually and bilaterally
\nfor sustainable peace. Achieving global peace is vital to attaining food
\nsecurity. Peace and food security should be pursued simultaneously,” he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
While welcoming the Ambassadors to Nigeria as they formally assume
\ndiplomatic responsibilities, the President urged them to build on the
\nsuccesses of their predecessors.<\/p>\n
“This age-long tradition and practice enshrined in the Vienna Convention
\non diplomatic relations marks the official commencement of your
\nfunctions as principal representatives of your respective countries,”
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of the diplomats, High Commissioner of The Gambia
\nthanked the President for the warm reception they had received since
\ncoming into the country.<\/p>\n
“We will not spare efforts in putting in our best to improve relations
