Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has condemned in strong terms the<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Monday wee hours attacks on facilities belonging to the Police and
\nCorrectional Services in Owerri, the Imo State capital, expressing
\nregrets and calling for thorough\u00a0 investigation into the dastard act.<\/p>\n

Criminal elements claiming to be members of the Indigenous Peoples of
\nBiafra (IPOB), had attacked the Imo State Police headquarters and Owerri
\nCorrectional Services Centre with dynamite, destroying buildings,
\nvehicles and other sensitive official materials and unlawfully setting
\nfree inmates which the authorities said were more than 1800.<\/p>\n

Speaking to newsmen after a tour of the two institutions in the company
\nof Chiefs of other security agencies like the Army, DSS, Civil Defence,
\nthe Police, and the Correctional Services Centre, Governor Uzodimma said
\nthe attacks were both cowardly and politically motivated.<\/p>\n

He said the primary intendment of the IPOB members who carried out the
\nattack was to create fears in the minds of the people and at the same
\ntime strive to secure the release of their fellow criminals in custody.<\/p>\n

However, Governor Uzodinma noted that government was on top of the
\nsituation knowing full well that the primary reason government exists is
\nthe protection of lives and property of the citizenry.<\/p>\n

He said he had met with the heads of security agencies in the state to
\nevaluate the incident and was confident the situation had been brought
\nunder control. ” We are on top of the situation and there is no need for
\nundue anxiety,” the governor said.<\/p>\n

He said given the magnitude of the attacks, the damage done and
\nsophisticated weapons deployed in the attack, he had directed that a
\ncomprehensive investigation into the situation be carried out with a
\nview to establishing the faces behind the heinous crime.<\/p>\n

The governor reiterated that the plan of the perpetrators of the
\ndespicable atrocity which was to cause panic and fear in he state had
\nalready collapsed.<\/p>\n

Governor Uzodinma urged Imo citizens and visitors alike to go about
\ntheir normal businesses without fear of molestation, noting that
\ngovernment was abreast of the situation and will do all within her
\nbehest\u00a0 to protect the lives and property of residents.<\/p>\n

He also used the opportunity to advise parents to rein in their wards
\nand resist the temptation to being used as cannon fodder in a war of
\nattrition being orchestrated by desperate politicians hiding behind
\ncriminal elements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
