Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has pledged to provide the major facilities
\nneeded for the full take-off of the three newly established universities
\nin the state, within the limits of available resources.<\/p>\n
The governor disclosed this, on Tuesday, while inspecting ongoing
\nprojects at the new Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba.<\/p>\n
He said that he would do everything humanly possible, in the remaining
\ntwo years of his administration, to ensure that the universities ran all
\ncourses approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).<\/p>\n
Okowa, who was in company of the Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State
\nUniversity, Abraka, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, and Commissioner for Higher
\nEducation, Prof. Patrick Muoghare, said all activities were on course
\nfor the institutions to take off in September and solicited support of
\nall stakeholders.<\/p>\n
He charged the contractors handling the projects to redouble efforts, as
\nhis administration was in a hurry to leave lasting legacies in the
\nstate, including in the education sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe that we are on course because we don\u2019t need to have all the
\nfacilities fully, but at least when they come in, they need to see
\nprogress and then they will come back to site to see what we are doing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, where we are now, with the
\nmain building, the classroom blocks and offices, auditoriums on two
\nsides, and what we also saw in the Faculty of Agriculture, you can see
\nwe are progressing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the first year, we won\u2019t be admitting into all the courses, but some
\ncourses have been approved for admissions and I believe that the two
\nbuildings in the faculty of environmental sciences will definitely be
\ncompleted by the end of September.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat of faculty of agriculture will most likely be completed in 2022,
\nbut the good thing is that they have places to start from.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are other structures that are existing in the campus that we are
\ngoing to put under construction to enable completion before the end of
\nSeptember,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Okowa assured that equal attention would be given to the three new
\nuniversities, to enable them compete favourably with other tertiary
\ninstitutions in the country and beyond.<\/p>\n
\u201cNext year, I will have to apply a lot of funds to the three
\nuniversities. I intend to visit the University of Science and
\nTechnology, Ozoro, and on Thursday, I will be at University of Delta,
\nAgbor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the Project Consultant, Mr Kester Ifeadi, who conducted the
\ngovernor and his team round various project sites at the institution,
\nsaid the first phase of the faculty and administrative buildings would
\nbe completed in line with the contractual agreement.<\/p>\n
He disclosed that the main faculty building would house 20 lecture
\nrooms, double auditoriums of 250-sitting capacity each, laboratories,
\noffices for the lecturers and other administrative staff, among other
\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
On their part, Commissioner for Higher Education, Muoboghare and his
\ncounterpart in Housing, Chief Festus Ochonogor, remarked that the
\ninstitution had structures that would be used for the take-off of
\nacademic sessions and lauded the governor for giving approval for the
\nconstruction and total upgrade of the university\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n
The governor also inspected the Vice Chancellor\u2019s lodge and ongoing
\nbuilding for the Department of Agriculture, where he expressed dismay
\nover some structural defects and directed the commissioner for housing
\nto ensure that the errors were quickly rectified. (NAN).<\/p>\n
