{"id":80251,"date":"2021-05-02T17:32:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-02T16:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=80251"},"modified":"2021-05-02T17:32:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-02T16:32:44","slug":"use-press-freedom-responsibly-buhari-urges-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/use-press-freedom-responsibly-buhari-urges-journalists\/","title":{"rendered":"Use Press Freedom Responsibly, Buhari Urges Journalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, observed globally every\u00a0<a dir=\"ltr\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\" data-mt-detrack-attachment-inspected=\"true\">May 3<\/a>, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his commitment to freedom of the press even as he urged media professionals to wield the freedom responsibly, and without licentiousness.<\/p>\n<p>While celebrating the landmark day with the media, the President in a statement by his media aide, Femi Adesina, noted that freedom of the press is an irreducible minimum in a democracy that would flourish, adding that freedom must, however, be used responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat everything is permitted does not mean that there are no rules of correctness, particularly in a polity seriously challenged as ours now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe media must be sensitive to what we are going through as a country, and anything that would exacerbate the situation, and further inflame passions and emotions, should be avoided. The media needs to ensure that while informing, educating, entertaining and setting agenda for public discourse, it does not encourage incendiary words and actions that could further hurt our unity in diversity,\u201d Buhari said.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Licentious freedom, the President said, is different from freedom with responsibility, and charges the Nigerian media to embrace the latter, rather than the former.<\/p>\n<p>On the part of government, President Buhari pledged greater cooperation with the media to discharge its duties, in line with the theme of this year\u2019s World Press Freedom Day, \u2018Information as a Public Good.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He, therefore, charged those who manage information for government to do everything in public interest, while also encouraging the media to use the Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) available to make its jobs easier.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The President submitted that it was very vital to have access to reliable information in an era of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, all to cause discord in society.<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, observed globally every\u00a0May 3, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his commitment to freedom of the press even as he urged media&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":80252,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-80251","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-exclusive"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
