\nThe Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Monday, attributed the delay in the return of the \u00a34.2m seized from a former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, and his associates from United\u00a0Kingdom to Nigeria to issues around bank documentations.<\/p>\n

He said although the Federal Government had anticipated two weeks within which\u00a0the loot would have been repatriated but the government is not in
\ncontrol of the banks.<\/p>\n

The minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr Umar Gwandu, disclosed this in a statement titled ‘Ibori loot expected soon
\n-Malami’.<\/p>\n

Recall that the Federal Government, through Malami, had on March 9, 2021 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UK on the return of the Ibori\u00a0loot.<\/p>\n

Despite the delay in the return however, the minister assured Nigerians that\u00a0the government is working tirelessly to ensure the return of the
\nIbori loot and other looted Nigerian assets kept outside the country’s territorial\u00a0boundaries.<\/p>\n

He explained further that sometimes when a country transfers funds, it may take a little bit time more than expected due to some documentations.<\/p>\n

He said his office and other relevant government agencies would keep the public\u00a0informed once the Ibori loot are received and confirmed, adding
\nthat the Federal Government is in touch with UK government on the matter.<\/p>\n

“Documentations with the banks in different countries often take longer than\u00a0anticipated.<\/p>\n

“We anticipated two weeks but we are not in control of the banks,” the statement\u00a0quoted Malami as saying.<\/p>\n

He maintained that the Federal Government is working assiduously to make sure\u00a0that the transfer goes through successfully.<\/p>\n

“There is neither complacency nor any delay as efforts are being made to ensure\u00a0successful transfer of the looted funds,” he further quoted as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n

He said the loot is being expected “any moment from now.”<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
