Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, former Vice President, Atiku
\nAbubakar and other prominent Nigerians received the Independent
\nNewspaper Awards at the weekend.<\/p>\n
The ceremony which was held at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels and
\nSuites, Lagos was the 10th Edition of Independent Newspaper Awards.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike bagged the Governor of the Year in Infrastructural
\nDevelopment for the infrastructural revolution taking place in Rivers
\nState.<\/p>\n
The Managing Director, Independent Newspaper Limited, Mr. Steve
\nOmanufeme, said Governor Wike has used the construction of roads and
\nother infrastructure to expand the economy of the State.<\/p>\n
“This year’s award focuses on people with exceptional performance in
\ntheir chosen profession and walks of life. That is why it is themed:
\nRecognising Excellence.<\/p>\n
“Our Board of Editors specifically embarked on thorough and painstaking
\nassessment exercise from which our distinguished awards recipients were
\nselected.<\/p>\n
“So, today we are here to celebrate you all for your services to Nigeria
\nin your chosen fields. Indeed, you all have a rich resume of achievement
\nworthy of emulation,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Receiving the award on behalf of Governor Wike, the state Commissioner
\nfor Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, thanked the
\nmanagement of Independent Newspapers for recognising the development
\nstrides of the Governor.<\/p>\n
He said that Governor Wike has within the last six years redefined
\ngovernance by embarking on people oriented projects in the 23 Local
\nGovernment Areas of Rivers State..<\/p>\n
According to him, the State has become the reliable index for
\ndevelopment even in the face of COVID-19 which has slowed down
\ngovernance across the globe.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Bamidele Alimi, who is also the
\nDirector-General of the Institute of Directors in Nigeria, enjoined
\nmedia practitioners to use\u00a0 corporate social responsibility to reshape
\nthe nation.<\/p>\n
Other award recipients include, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr.
\nAbdullahi Sule; Governor Muhammed Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe State; and
