Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, says the State will give<\/div>\n
\n
N20 million(twenty million Naira)\u00a0 to the families of each of the eleven
\npolice personnel killed by gunmen during recent attacks of police
\nformations in the State.<\/p>\n

The governor, who announced this during a condolence visit to the
\nCommissioner of Police, Friday Eboka and officers of the State Police
\nCommand on Monday, tasked them to henceforth be on offensive against
\nthose who perpetrated these heinous acts.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike, while addressing officers and men at the Police Officers
\nMess in Port Harcourt, said his visit was to commiserate with them over
\nthe death of some of their colleagues who lost their lives in line of
\nduty while protecting the State.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that though no amount of money can equate to human life,
\nthe State’s gesture is aimed at\u00a0 assuaging the bereaved families that
\ntheir loved ones never died in vain.<\/p>\n

The governor described as heart-wrenching the unwarranted killing of
\npolicemen who were legitimately protecting lives and property of
\ncitizens of the country.<\/p>\n

“In the past two to three weeks, we have lost eleven police officers and
\nmen. This is a dark period for us in the State.”<\/p>\n

He lamented that those who carried out the dastardly killings have
\ncoldheartedly turned the wives of the slain policemen to widows and
\nrendered their children, fatherless for no just cause.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike charged the State Police Command to be\u00a0 more proactive to
\nward-off further attacks, and resolve never again to condone the killing
\nof its personnel by those who are bent on instigating crisis in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n

The governor reiterated that no amount of vicious attacks or
\nintimidation can compel Rivers State to become part of any secession
\nagenda. He maintained that the people of Rivers State believe in the
\nunity of the Nigerian State.<\/p>\n

“We must be united to fight for this country to be one. We must not
\nallow anyone to talk about secession. If you want to secede, Rivers
\nState is not part of it, and nobody can cow Rivers State to be part of
\nit. Not under my watch will I allow that.”<\/p>\n

The governor, who assured the State Police Command of the government’s
\ncontinuous support, however, charged police personnel to be more careful
\nand vigilant.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Friday Eboka on behalf of the Acting
\nInspector General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, thanked the governor for
\nassuaging the pain of the bereaved families.<\/p>\n

Eboka told the governor that the armed men who attacked three different
\npolice formations for no justifiable reason gruesomely killed seven
\nofficers. According to him, two officers who sustained bullet injuries,
\nare receiving treatment.<\/p>\n

“It is noteworthy that the hoodlums did not escape without suffering
\nfatalities, as two of them lost their lives and their Hilux riddled with
\nbullets was abandoned. Thanks to RRT Commander and other Tactical Teams
\nwho responded to the distress call.”<\/p>\n

He stated that in spite of these ugly developments, officers and men of
\nthe State command will not shy away from their responsibilities.<\/p>\n

“Your visit today will further boost their morals. I therefore want to
\nuse this opportunity to re-assure the good people of Rivers State of our
\nresolve to continue to protect their lives and property.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
