{"id":83214,"date":"2021-07-06T08:36:25","date_gmt":"2021-07-06T07:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=83214"},"modified":"2021-07-06T08:36:25","modified_gmt":"2021-07-06T07:36:25","slug":"soyinka-to-buhari-set-up-govt-of-national-unity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/soyinka-to-buhari-set-up-govt-of-national-unity\/","title":{"rendered":"Soyinka To Buhari: Set Up Gov\u2019t Of National Unity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a Government of National Unity.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BBC Pidgin on the state of the nation on Monday, Soyinka said this became necessary as the state of mind of vast sections of the country mentally, spiritually and economically was that of total distrust for the government.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cThis government has earned itself, either rightly or wrongly, that\u2019s for the government to decide, but anybody who is telling this government that the people of this nation still trust it, I\u2019m sorry, and the government believes that, it\u2019s really plunging this nation further into the abyss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s only one thing to be done to try and win the trust of the people, and in political terms, it\u2019s called Government of National Unity as an interim measure. That\u2019s all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterim measure, especially, towards the next election, in order to have a continuing confab among those who execute policies, in order to regain, of course, basically, a sense of participation, of involvement of the people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it\u2019s a very hard pill to swallow, but as I said, it\u2019s an interim thing. During that process, you\u2019ll structurally examine the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, I know they\u2019ve been tinkering with it here and there, but we\u2019ve been going through that for ages, there have been constitutional review committees under various regimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd sit down, admit your inadequacy, because this has become glaring over the years, even before the last elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve said over and over, I\u2019ve spoken out on it very privately and very frankly to even members of the ruling party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe distrust is too deep and it\u2019s only a confab, through a Government of National Unity, as an interim measure, that can actually suggest or offer a sliver of hope for the continuity of this nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said so much damage had been done in the past few years through some \u201ccentralist\u201d and \u201csneaky\u201d policies of the government such as the RUGA and the Water Resources Control Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Soyinka also criticized the manner of the re-arrest of the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and the raid on the home of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho.<\/p>\n<p>He said although no past president had been without acts of constitutional breaches, the incumbent had a responsibility to remedy the situation.<\/p><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a Government of National Unity.
