{"id":86000,"date":"2021-09-16T06:23:17","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T05:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=86000"},"modified":"2021-09-16T06:23:17","modified_gmt":"2021-09-16T05:23:17","slug":"okonjo-iweala-among-times-100-most-influential-people-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/okonjo-iweala-among-times-100-most-influential-people-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Okonjo-Iweala among Time\u2019s 100 most influential people in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m7177\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has been listed as one of Time Magazine\u2019s 100 most influential people for 2021.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal  \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Time Magazine\u2019s annual list of 100 most influential people in the world accords recognition to \u201cpeople whose ideas, example, talent, or discoveries transform the world we live in\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The list, released on Wednesday, places the individuals in five categories: Titans, pioneers, artists, leaders and icons.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Okonjo-Iweala, who became the first woman and first African to lead the WTO in March, was included in the \u201cleaders\u201d category, alongside Joe Biden, President of the United States of America; Kamala Harris, US Vice President; Xi Jinping, President of China, and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Okonjo-Iweala\u2019s efforts, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, said the former Nigerian minister of finance \u201cknows how to get things done\u201d, and praised her work at the helm of affairs at WTO.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The couple said in the magazine, \u201cWhat will it take to vaccinate the world? Unity, cooperation and leaders like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the first African and first woman to lead the World Trade Organization, a 164-member group of nations that oversees trade across the world, Okonjo-Iweala took on the role of director-general this March at a watershed moment for our global health and well-being. Make no mistake; her job affects every person, family and community.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cAs we face a constant barrage of vaccine misinformation, bureaucratic slowdowns across both government and industry, and the rise of variants that underscore the urgency of the situation, Okonjo-Iweala has shown us that to end the pandemic; we must work together to equip every nation with equitable vaccine access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur conversations with her have been as informative as they are energizing. This is partly because, despite the challenges, she knows how to get things done\u2014even between those who don\u2019t always agree\u2014and does so with grace and a smile that warms the coldest of rooms.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cThe fragility of our world right now cannot be overstated. Just over a quarter of the nearly 8 billion global population is fully vaccinated. Achieving vaccine equity is a global duty of compassion for one another.
