A beleaguered\u00a0 nation already neck deep\u00a0 in the throes of security
\ncrisis woke up yet again to another distressing report that Olajide
\nSowore , the younger brother of Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele
\nSowore, has been assassinated by armed men suspected to be\u00a0 Fulani
\nherders along Benin – Ore portion of the ever busy Benin-Shagamu
\nhighway.<\/p>\n

In Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city once came a report that a gun-trotting
\npoliceman threatened to shoot the publisher –\u00a0 the convener of
\n#RevolutionNow.<\/p>\n

From the Nigerian Atlantic littoral to the Sahelian plains of Northern
\nNigeria\u00a0 have been reports about bloodshed by a band of aggressive
\nexpansionists from the Futa Jalon\u00a0 masquerading as herdsmen. This has
\nattracted different interpretations by concerned Nigerians and
\nnon-Nigerians alike.<\/p>\n

Today, everything is sixes and sevens as telecom operators have
\nreportedly shut down 240 base stations in Zamfara, one of Northern
\nNigeria’s desert states\u00a0 over the activities of hardline insurgents.<\/p>\n

A few weeks ago came yet another distressing report of an armed invasion
\nof the nation’s military university – The Nigerian Defence Academy which
\nleft scores of officers dead.
\nOn the north-eastern flank of the country rages\u00a0 bloody insurgency which
\nhas dragged on to this day.<\/p>\n

There has been no end to abductions and killings by bandits and
\ninsurgents across northern Nigeria. No sooner had the government in
\nAbuja read the Riot Act to perpetrators than the killings and abductions
\nfor ransom continued\u00a0 with undiminished intensity.<\/p>\n

The security crisis in the region has spiralled out of control so much
\nso that the nation’s highways are now seen as valleys of death – a gross
\ndeparture from the once sunnier, salubrious climes.<\/p>\n

Schools in the region have been hard hit as scores of students have been
\nabducted which redounds on our academic calendar.<\/p>\n

Today, the doctors have proceeded on a nation-wide strike\u00a0 with repeated
\npleas by the Federal Government to return to work fallen on deaf ears
\nthus leaving Nigerians noosed and hooded.<\/p>\n

Amid throes of this\u00a0 obviously sad situation the Janjaweed expansionists
\nfrom\u00a0 Futa Jalon have long\u00a0 commenced\u00a0 their ill-conceived plan to
\noverrun the country via ethnic cleansing as many Nigerians are being
\nhacked to death in their communities. We really have never had it so
\nbad.<\/p>\n

What agitates this writer is the obvious departure from their\u00a0 campaign
\npromises in the build-up to the 2015 general elections.<\/p>\n

He did expressly say Nigeria was being managed by wrong hands and
\npromised to fight like a Trojan for a better Nigeria where life would be
\nsuper abundant.<\/p>\n

On the economic front, the situation could be better imagined than real.
\nNigeria – a potentially great economic superpower has been reduced to
\neconomic backwater as many businesses have relocated to neighbouring
\nWest African states. Many Nigerians solicit for alms in the streets of
\nEurope. Does this not suprise you? This is heart-rending if you ask me!<\/p>\n

The government in Abuja continues to tell Nigerians otherwise when it is
\ncrystal clear it has not only failed woefully but abysmally!<\/p>\n

To tender our international passport before foreign immigration desk or
\nforeign passport control\u00a0\u00a0 is almost tantamount to a crime and to say
\none is not surprised would be an understatement as the Abuja regime
\ncontinues to\u00a0 feign ignorance of this.<\/p>\n

The Federal Government’s ruinous economic policies have set Nigeria
\nbackward which speaks volumes for\u00a0 the mass exodus of Nigerians abroad
\nin search of the proverbial greener pastures.<\/p>\n

Many Nigerians have been forced out of their homelands into the fiery
\nSahara desert to the coast of North Africa for perilous sea journey on
\ndinghies to Europe\u00a0 and many have perished in the course of this
\nneedless adventure with little or no reaction by the Abuja regime to
\nstem the tide via formulation and holistic implementation of
\nreinvigorating\u00a0 economic policies to improve the lots of our people.<\/p>\n

Fellow Nigerians, we cannot continue like\u00a0 a lamb\u00a0 to the slaughter
\nexcept we say we are contented with the status quo which I am sure no
\nsane person\u00a0 is. To keep the records straight,\u00a0 I am no advocate of
\nsecession, hence I should therefore not be misconstrued nor mistaken for
\none. Those asking for total disintegration of the country should have
\nanother think coming because it is an ill-wind that will blow no one any
\ngood. All I crave is a better and even larger Nigeria run on true
\ndemocratic norms, ideals and valies.<\/p>\n

Far from\u00a0 disintegration of our country, we are better off in a larger
\nNigeria\u00a0 under the leadership of a band of competent technocrats\u00a0\u00a0 – a
\none, united and indivisible\u00a0 Nigeria run on the ideals of social justice
\nand mutual respect among the diverse elements that make up the
\nfederation.<\/p>\n

There are some technocrats par excellence\u00a0 who presently occupy
\nleadership positions whose states have benefited immensely from their
\nwealth of experience.<\/p>\n

States which were neck deep in debts have swam out of it via
\nreinvigorating policies. We know them. Edo State is a case in point
\nthat was saddled with a massive debt burden under\u00a0 Mr Adams Oshomhole
\nwhile\u00a0 governor but his successor Mr Godwin Obaseki has successfully
\nredeemed his state and\u00a0 navigated her out of debts foisted on it\u00a0 by his
\npredecessor during the prodigal years of his misrule. Edo as one of the
\ngreen states under Governor Obaseki today boasts of good service
\ninfrastructures and youth empowerment programmes that have repositioned
\nit in the path of development and economic prosperity.<\/p>\n

Rivers State under Governor Nyesom Wike is another case in point. This
\nis one governor that has continued to\u00a0 give his state a facelift via
\nservice infrastructures in the midst of scarce resources.<\/p>\n

Governor Ortom of Benue State is another man who is committed to
\npurposeful leadership that has done a lot to better the lives of his
\npeople in spite of the raging insurgency in his state that has sent many
\nof his people untimely to their graves.<\/p>\n

Ethnicity and religious affiliations should be cast overboard by true
\nlovers of Nigeria in our quest for able hands to lead the\u00a0 salvage
\noperations.
\nToday, a casual visitor to Kaduna State in North Central Nigeria would
\nthink he is somewhere in one of the metropolitan cities in Europe. We
\nowe this to the exemplary leadership of Gov El- Rufai.<\/p>\n

Lagos the nation’s number one city under former Governor Ambode
\nrecorded giant strides in terms of infrastructural development which I
\noften stand in awe of.<\/p>\n

Kano under Engr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso witnessed infrastructural
\ndevelopment. Goodness knows if his successor has maintained that pace to
\nthis day.<\/p>\n

There is no gainsaying the fact that\u00a0 purposeful leadership by
\ncompetent technocrats ethnicity and religious faith notwithstanding
\nwould\u00a0 revitalize the obviously decadent paralysis.\u00a0 The ruling\u00a0 All
\nProgressives Congress and the esrtwhile ruling party – the Peoples
\nDemocratic Party abound in them.<\/p>\n

Hence it is for Nigerians to scout around\u00a0 for the best\u00a0 among the lot
\nto lead the salvage operations of which we urgently stand in need or
\nelse we shall continue to\u00a0 move round in circles which would not be in
\nour best interest after all.<\/p>\n

Many great nations today once had their challenges and Nigeria’s case is
\nno exception.
\nRivers and Lagos States have set the pace in our quest for fiscal
\nrestructuring while others are reportedly studying the situation before
\nfollowing suit which is about the best thing to do under the existing
\ncircumstances.<\/p>\n

Party affiliation should not be allowed to erode our sense of reasoning
\nwhile our people continue to thrive on dirt and dirty surroundings.<\/p>\n

This is where I irrevocably stand as the Sword of Damocles hangs\u00a0 over
\nNigeria.<\/p>\n
