Academic activities have been grounded at the Abia State Polytechnic as the students took over the Aba- Owerri road protesting the alleged rape of three female students of the institution by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, (RRS) in Aba.<\/div>\n

\nThe students also protested the non accreditation of the Civil Engineering department of the Polytechnic.<\/p>\n

Pointblanknews.com gathered that the students were meant to commence their semester examinations on Thursday, but rather took to the road on protest.<\/p>\n

The placards displayed during the protest read; “Say No to Rape\u201d, Sell this school and give us our money”, amongst others.<\/p>\n

The students of the Department of Civil Engineering lamented that they are being given certificates bearing Department of Building on graduation and urged the Abia State government and the management of the Polytechnic to expedite action to accredit the department to enable them graduate with certificates bearing Civil Engineering.<\/p>\n

On the alleged rape,the students stated that three female students residing at a Lodge near the Aba North LGA secretariat were raped and are now receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital in the city.<\/p>\n

The students lamented that some personnel of the RRS team has been sexually harassing them at their Lodge.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are protesting the rape of our students by Policemen at Eziama, these police people are still the same SARS who were disbanded and given another name, RRS. They raped three female students at their Lodge. The students are now in hospital. We say no to rape. The policemen must be punished. We are also protesting about the non accreditation of the Department of civil engineering by NBTE. Students of Civil Engineering who have graduated are being given certificates bearing Department of Building. Who can somebody who was offered admission to study civil Engineering be made to bear certificate bearing Building. How can you graduate a student on a course he didn\u2019t study even if it is related?This is a fraud. This is why we are protesting because the Polytechnic is not doing anything to correct the problem,\u201d the students said.<\/p>\n

Addressing the protesting students, Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Kalu Osonwa, said he got information that the RRS men were molesting students of the Polytechnic.<\/p>\n

He promised that the management of the institution will look into the complaints of sexual assault and the non accreditation of the department of civil Engineering.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
