appointment of Catherine Chinedum (\u2018ChiChi\u2019) Aniagolu-Okoye as its new
\nregional director for its office serving West Africa. Aniagolu-Okoye
\nbegan the Lagos-based role in September.<\/p>\n

Aniagolu-Okoye succeeds the late Innocent Chukwuma who served as
\nregional director from 2013 to 2021 and helped the foundation to build
\nits brand in the region and to establish solid partnerships with donors,
\ncivil society, public and private sector leaders.<\/p>\n

With over 20 years in the social change sector, Aniagolu-Okoye is a
\nrespected leader on the African continent and brings many years of
\nextensive experience leading diverse international development
\norganizations, managing country programs, donor projects and country
\nstrategies in West Africa and across Africa.<\/p>\n

As regional director, she will oversee the foundation\u2019s local team,
\nexternal relations and administrative operations in West Africa. She
\nwill also lead on program strategy development and implementation in the
\nregion, with a focus on advancing democracy, human rights and social
\ninclusion for all especially youth, women and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

\nexperience and leadership, and her expertise in navigating civil society
\ncircles will be invaluable as our work in West Africa grows,\u201d said
\nDarren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation. \u201cChiChi\u2019s reputation as
\na strong operational leader and an African feminist will bring a
\ncritical perspective to our work to help address some of the region\u2019s
\nmost pressing opportunities and challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout her career, Aniagolu-Okoye has designed and implemented
\nstrategies at regional and global organizations on key social issues
\nsuch as improving governance, reducing poverty, advancing transparency
\nin the extractives sector, and furthering women and girl\u2019s empowerment \u2013
\nall through engaging civil society as well as the public and private
\nsectors.<\/p>\n

Before Ford, Aniagolu-Okoye was most recently the Country Director of
\nTechnoserve, an international NGO that provides business solutions to
\npoverty with women at the heart of the work. Prior, she was the Country
\nDirector for WaterAid in Nigeria where she provided grants to civil
\nsociety organizations advocating for improved access to water,
\nsanitation, and hygiene services and strengthening civil society
\nnetworks, including one focused on journalists dedicated to telling more
\naccurate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) stories. Before WaterAid,
\nChiChi led Girl Effect, an initiative of the Nike Foundation focused on
\ngirls\u2019 empowerment, and also served as Country Director for
\nOxfam\/Nigeria. At Oxfam, she led strategies on reducing inequalities
\nthrough initiatives on tax and gender justice, including the VOICE
\nprogram that addressed gender-based violence and transparency in the
\nextractives sector.<\/p>\n

Earlier in her career Aniagolu-Okoye was Deputy Program Director of a
\nEuropean Union project focused on reforming public sector service
\ndelivery with more efficient management of public finances, budget
\nreform and accountability in six Nigerian states. Prior to that, she was
\nthe West Africa Director for ASHOKA Innovators for the Public, focusing
\non advancing social entrepreneurs in Nigeria, Ghana, C\u00f4te d’Ivoire and
\nMali.<\/p>\n

\nfocused on building a world where everyone has the power to shape their
\nown lives and live with dignity,\u201d says Aniagolu-Okoye. \u201cThe Ford
\nFoundation successfully promotes social justice and reducing inequality
\nin West Africa \u2013 a vision I am fully aligned with and honored to help
\nshepherd and grow in the regional office.\u201d<\/p>\n

She will be taking over from Dabesaki Mac-Ikemenjima who served as
\ninterim regional director since January while continuing his primary
\nrole as program officer leading the foundation\u2019s intersectional work in
\nthe West Africa region.<\/p>\n

Aniagolu-Okoye holds a Ph.D in Sociology specializing in Gender and
\nDevelopment from University College Cork in Ireland, and a B.Sc in
\nSociology and Anthropology from the University of Nigeria Nsukka. She is
\na founder of the South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO), a
\nmember of the Advisory Board of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy
\nCentre (CISLAC), and an Africa Policy Advisory board member of The One
\nCampaign.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
