{"id":87602,"date":"2021-10-26T07:13:54","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T06:13:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=87602"},"modified":"2021-10-26T07:13:54","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T06:13:54","slug":"revenue-sharing-formula-kano-demands-special-status-asks-for-1-allocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/revenue-sharing-formula-kano-demands-special-status-asks-for-1-allocation\/","title":{"rendered":"Revenue Sharing Formula: Kano Demands Special Status, Asks For 1% Allocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m14822\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kano State Government has demanded a one per cent special status in the Federal revenue allocation formula.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal  \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nThe Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji made the demand in a memorandum presented at the North West Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the current vertical revenue allocation formula organized by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission in Kaduna.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement issued by Director Information, Kano Ministry of Information ,Inuwa Idris Yakasai, on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019Alhaji Alhaji\u00a0 who is also the head of Kano state delegation said that the demand is genuine, justifiable and in no way controversial considering the enormous responsibilities the state is currently shouldering due to high influx\u00a0 of people displaced or affected by insecurity in neighboring states including Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto and others, \u2018\u2019said the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The SSG also highlighted the status of the state as the most populous in the country, its cosmopolitan and heterogeneous nature as \u201cmini Nigeria\u201d, as well as being the commercial hub for the north that attracts and accommodates people from all parts of the country and beyond, as other reasons for the demand.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the Secretary to the State Government therefore urged the federal government to positively consider the special status demand so as to support the development of Kano particularly in the areas of agriculture, trade &amp; commerce and manufacturing as \u201cit will translate into rapid development for the country generally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur reasons are for the development of Nigeria as a whole\u201d,it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019The SSG further noted that the current revenue sharing formula is skewed largely in favour of the federal government to the detriment of states and local governments as the federating units, which he described as uneven, unfair and unjust.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019He noted that the decision of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review the current revenue sharing formula, in line with its statutory constitutional responsibilities,\u00a0 is commendable as it is long overdue in view of the changing political, economic, social and ecological realities in the country.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019Alhaji Usman Alhaji further noted that despite taking the lion\u2019s share, the federal government could not effectively and adequately discharge most of its responsibilities in states, like ensuring security and provision of healthcare services which, he said, were left for the states to take care of.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201d The insecurity and violence in the North can be link to the uneven distribution of the national wealth. \u2026Some have too little while others have too much to spend. As federating units, no one should be left in dare need \u201c, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; While noting that states spend more than the federal government on healthcare and other services in addition to huge expenditure for the police and DSS, he suggested that states should have larger share in the revenue allocation formula.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019The SSG therefore proposed a new sharing formula of 41 percent for Federal Government, 34 percent for states and 24 percent for local governments while the 13 percent derivation should be maintained.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The statement said the Kano State delegation to the North West Zonal public hearing comprised of commissioners, Special Advisers, top civil servants, traditional leaders, representatives of CSOs, NGOs and students organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Other states that presented memoranda at the event include Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kano State Government has demanded a one per cent special status in the Federal revenue allocation formula.
