{"id":87748,"date":"2021-10-29T07:33:24","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T06:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=87748"},"modified":"2021-10-29T07:33:24","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T06:33:24","slug":"firs-to-begin-tax-audit-on-operators-in-maritime-aviation-sectors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/firs-to-begin-tax-audit-on-operators-in-maritime-aviation-sectors\/","title":{"rendered":"FIRS To Begin Tax Audit On Operators In Maritime, Aviation Sectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m16107\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has stated that it will commence back-end tax audit on operators in the maritime and aviation industries.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal  \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nIts chairman, Muhammad Nami, disclosed this\u00a0 while delivering an address at the Pedabo Thought Leadership Breakfast Session, focused on tax issues and the impact on development in the maritime and aviation industry, held in Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FIRS will soon launch a tax audit exercise on operators in the maritime and aviation industries.\u201d He stated, according to a statement that was issued by the agency. Nami added that \u201cBack-end pre-audit activities, in collaboration with regulatory authorities in the industries, are at advanced stages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FIRS chairman called on foreign players in these industries, who had lifted cargoes out of Nigeria without paying taxes to voluntarily come forward and regularise their tax standing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me use this opportunity to invite all foreign companies that have lifted cargoes (including crude oil) out of Nigeria without paying tax in line with extant law to voluntarily come forward to regularise their tax positions.\u00a0 Those who would wait for FIRS\u2019 audit before doing the right thing may find the taste very unsavoury.\u201d He stated.<\/p>\n<p>Nami lamented that as important as the maritime and aviation industries are to the economic development of Nigeria, they were not yielding the expected revenue to the Federation\u2019s purse.<\/p>\n<p>Blaming the poor revenue turn out on many factors, he stated that a major reason for the poor yield was the failure of foreign companies lifting cargoes to pay tax.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; The low tax revenue performance of the two industries can be attributed to many factors, chief of which is the failure of foreign companies lifting cargoes (particularly, crude oil) to pay tax.\u00a0 This is contrary to the provisions of the extant tax laws.\u00a0 The revenue leakage from these non-compliant companies is very huge.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has stated that it will commence back-end tax audit on operators in the maritime and aviation industries.
