{"id":88366,"date":"2021-11-10T15:12:58","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T14:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=88366"},"modified":"2021-11-10T20:15:11","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T19:15:11","slug":"breaking-court-adjourns-kanus-trial-to-jan-19-as-lawyers-stage-walk-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/breaking-court-adjourns-kanus-trial-to-jan-19-as-lawyers-stage-walk-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking: Court adjourns Kanu\u2019s trial to Jan 19, as lawyers stage walk out"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1716036304909238023\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned trial of detained leader of the Indegenious People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu till January 19.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The adjournment came on a day Kanu\u2019s team of lawyers, staged a walk-out over refusal of operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, to allow some of them to gain access into the courtroom.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kanu, who was brought into the courtroom around 9:52am, had shortly after his case was called up, bemoaned the refusal of security agents to allow some members of his legal team, especially his lawyer from the the United State of America, Bruce Fein, to enter the courtroom.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The IPOB leader told the court that Mr. Fein, who he said was handling a case for him in the US, was around to witness his trial.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>\u201cI have an ongoing case in the US. I have not been allowed to see him. He is here to see me and to observe the proceedings.\u201cHe has been to the DSS to see me, but they denied him access to me\u201d, Kanu stated from the dock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Asked by the Judge, if he was ready to conduct the proceedings himself, in the absence of his lawyers, Kanu replied in the negative.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, counsel to FG, Mr. M. D. Abubakar, who is the Director of Public Prosecution, urged the court to proceed with the trial in the absence of Kanu\u2019s lawyers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Abubakar told the court that ordinarily, the matter was fixed for hearing of an application that was filed by the Defendant.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that since Kanu\u2019s lead counsel, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who was initially inside the courtroom, walked out with his team shortly before the arrival of the judge, his pending application should be deemed abandoned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In a short ruling, though Justice Nyako expressed his displeasure over the conduct of Kanu\u2019s lawyers, she declined to dismiss the pending application and rather adjourned the case till January 19 and 20, 2022, for trial.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned trial of detained leader of the Indegenious People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu till January 19.
