United Nations and United States have welcomed the report submitted by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters (Lagos EndSARS Panel), urging government to implement the stated recommendations.<\/div>\n
\nIn a statement signed by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria Mr Edward Kallon, made available to journalists on Tuesday, UN said it has welcomed the report submitted yesterday.<\/div>\n

The statement reads: \u201cI welcome the submission to the Lagos State Governor, H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of the reports of the judicial panel on claims of brutality and shooting in the Lekki area of Lagos State, during the 2020 EndSARS protests,\u201d<\/div>\n
\nMr Kallon noted that the submission of the findings of the judicial panel would accelerate the process of justice and accountability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urge the government to implement the recommendations of the judicial panel of inquiry to rebuild trust and start the process of healing and reconciliation.\u201d The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator added.<\/p><\/div>\n

\nOn its own part, the United States said it has welcomed the conclusion of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry with the transmission of its final report.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to the Lagos State government\u2019s response as part of a process that represents an important mechanism of accountability regarding the #EndSARS protests and the events that took place near the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\u201cThose events led to serious allegations against some members of the security forces, and we look forward to the Lagos State and federal governments taking suitable measures to address those alleged abuses as well as the grievances of the victims and their families.\u201d<\/div>\n

Lekki Tollgate incident was a massacre \u2014 Lagos ENDSARS Panel<\/b><\/p>\n

Pointblanknews.com reports that the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters (Lagos EndSARS Panel) declared the October incident a massacre.<\/p>\n

The panel indicted soldiers and implicated Nigeria\u2019s security agents in the killing and forced disappearances of harmless and unarmed youths protesting at Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020.<\/p>\n

The Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel made the revelation in a 309-page report submitted to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Monday.<\/p><\/div>\n

According to the report, at least 48 protesters were either shot dead.<\/p>\n

Also, page 294 of the report read: \u201cThe atrocious maiming and killing of unarmed, helpless and unresisting protesters, while sitting on the floor and waving their Nigerian flags, while singing the National Anthem can be equated to a \u2018massacre\u2019 in context.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

In page 295: \u201cIt was alleged and corroborated that the soldiers had their vans parked at the Lekki Toll Gate and removed as many bodies and corpses of the fallen protesters which they took away with their vans.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0 Panel\u00a0 also\u00a0 found\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 conduct\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Nigerian Army\u00a0 was\u00a0 exacerbated\u00a0 by\u00a0 its\u00a0 refusal\u00a0 to\u00a0 allow\u00a0 ambulances\u00a0 render\u00a0 medical\u00a0 assistance to\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 victims\u00a0 who\u00a0 required\u00a0 such\u00a0 assistance.<\/p><\/div>\n

32 Recommendations<\/p>\n

\u201cHolistic\u00a0 Police\u00a0 Reforms\u00a0 covering\u00a0 welfare,\u00a0 training\u00a0 and\u00a0 proper\u00a0 equipping\u00a0 of\u00a0 Policemen and\u00a0 their\u00a0 working\u00a0 environment;<\/p>\n

\u201cSanctioning\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 officers\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Nigerian\u00a0 Army\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 Nigerian\u00a0 Police\u00a0 Force respectively\u00a0 who\u00a0 participated\u00a0 in\u00a0 shooting,\u00a0 injuring\u00a0 and\u00a0 killing\u00a0 of\u00a0 unarmed\u00a0 protestors at\u00a0 the\u00a0 Lekki\u00a0 Toll\u00a0 Gate\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 20\u00a0 and\u00a0 21st\u00a0 of\u00a0 October\u00a0 2020;<\/p>\n

\u201cDevelopment\u00a0 of\u00a0 more\u00a0 robust\u00a0 engagement\u00a0 between\u00a0 the\u00a0 Youth\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 Government;<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0 recognition\u00a0 of\u00a0 Hospitals\u00a0 and\u00a0 Medical\u00a0 Doctors\u00a0 who\u00a0 played\u00a0 heroic\u00a0 roles\u00a0 following the\u00a0 Incident\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Lekki\u00a0 Toll\u00a0 Gate\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 20th\u00a0 of\u00a0 October\u00a0 2020\u00a0 thereby\u00a0 saving\u00a0 lives and\u00a0 minimizing\u00a0 the\u00a0 impact\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 injuries\u00a0 suffered\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 victims,\u00a0 most\u00a0 of\u00a0 which\u00a0 were on\u00a0 a\u00a0 pro-bono\u00a0 basis;<\/p>\n
