{"id":88923,"date":"2021-11-23T06:48:21","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T05:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=88923"},"modified":"2021-11-23T06:48:21","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T05:48:21","slug":"ecowas-court-after-20years-only-6-member-countries-obey-rulings-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/other-news\/ecowas-court-after-20years-only-6-member-countries-obey-rulings-judge\/","title":{"rendered":"ECOWAS Court: After 20years, Only 6 Member-countries Obey Rulings \u2013 Judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1717194363385170158\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice says only six West African countries are ready to respect its rulings 20 years after its establishment.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nThe president of the court, Justice Amoako Asante, said since establishment of the court in 1991, only six countries of the 15 member states had met the pre-requisite for obeying the court rulings.<\/p>\n<p>Giving an address at the opening of an international conference to celebrate the court at 20 and also seek law reviews and advance its knowledge, Asante said that all countries ought to have set up a national authority to implement its rulings.<\/p>\n<p>The conference has as its theme: \u201c20 Years of ECOWAS Court of Justice: Achievements, Challenges and Prospects\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He listed Guinea, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana as the six countries that had set up a competent authority to implement the court rulings as stipulated in the protocol.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; The poor rate of compliance with judgements of the court, which currently stands at about 30 per cent, is also of grave concern to the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe regret that only six member states have appointed the competent national authorities for the enforcement of judgements of the court in their respective domains.<\/p>\n<p>These are the Republic of Guinea, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana.
