{"id":90077,"date":"2021-12-19T11:25:33","date_gmt":"2021-12-19T10:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=90077"},"modified":"2021-12-19T11:25:33","modified_gmt":"2021-12-19T10:25:33","slug":"omicron-who-raises-alarm-cases-doubling-at-least-every-3-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/omicron-who-raises-alarm-cases-doubling-at-least-every-3-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Omicron: WHO Raises Alarm, Cases Doubling At Least Every 3 Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m25604\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over Omicron variant of the coronavirus which is spreading significantly faster than the Delta strain in countries with documented community transmission, with the number of cases doubling in 1.5 to 3 days.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal  \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nIn a recent update, the United Nations\u2019 health agency said Omicron has been reported in 89 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The highly mutated variant is spreading rapidly in countries with high levels of population immunity, the WHO said, but it is unclear if this is due to the virus\u2019 ability to evade immunity, its inherent increased transmissibility or a combination of both.<\/p>\n<p>The agency designated Omicron a variant of concern on November 26, soon after it was first detected by scientists in South Africa, and much is still not known about it. Scientists remain uncertain how dangerous it is, but early data suggests it can be more resistant to vaccines and more transmissible than the Delta variant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are still limited data on the clinical severity of Omicron,\u201d the WHO said in its update. \u201cMore data are needed to understand the severity profile and how severity is impacted by vaccination and pre-existing immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added, \u201cThere are still limited available data, and no peer-reviewed evidence, on vaccine efficacy or effectiveness to date for Omicron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, a non-peer reviewed study by Imperial College London said the risk of reinfection with Omicron is more than five times higher and it has shown no sign of being milder than Delta.<\/p>\n<p>The research cast doubt on the cautious optimism of some experts, based primarily on anecdotal accounts from South Africa, that the new strain may not be as virulent and not overwhelm healthcare systems.<\/p>\n<p>The study was released as British officials reported record COVID-19 cases for the third consecutive day, with a rise to 93,045 new infections, while French Prime Minister Jean Castex likened Omicron\u2019s spread in Europe to \u201clightning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, United States President Joe Biden warned of a \u201cwinter of severe illness and death\u201d for those unvaccinated against COVID-19, while health ministers at the G7 bloc of advanced economies called Omicron the biggest threat to global public health.<\/p>\n<p>It came after WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Omicron \u201cis spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant\u201d and lamented that some people were dismissing it as a mild variant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurely, we have learned by now that we underestimate this virus at our peril,\u201d he told a media briefing on Tuesday. \u201cEven if Omicron does cause less severe disease, the sheer number of cases could once again overwhelm unprepared health systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over Omicron variant of the coronavirus which is spreading significantly faster than the Delta strain in countries with documented community transmission, with&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":90078,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-90077","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
