without justice.\u201d \u2014 Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., chanted<\/div>\n
this statement outside a California prison, which was holding Vietnam<\/div>\n
War protesters on December 14, 1967.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Today’s torrent of cries of marginalization, mutual suspicions within<\/div>\n
Nigeria’s body-politic have existed as far back as pre-Independence on<\/div>\n
October 1, 1960.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For instance, sometime in 1948, Nigeria’s First Republic Prime Minister,<\/div>\n
Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, while speaking on Nigeria’s unity had argued:<\/div>\n
“Since 1914, Britain has been trying to make Nigeria into one country,<\/div>\n
but the people themselves are historically different in their<\/div>\n
backgrounds, religious beliefs, customs and don’t show themselves any<\/div>\n
sign of willingness to unite. Nigerian unity is only a British<\/div>\n
intention.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Similarly, Nigeria’s First Republic Ceremonial President, Dr. Nnamdi<\/div>\n
Azikiwe and Northern Region Premier, Sir Ahmadu Bello, in the 1960s, had<\/div>\n
the following media conversation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Azikiwe: \u201cLet’s forget our differences…\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Ahmadu Bello: “No, let’s understand our differences. I’m a Muslim and a<\/div>\n
Northernern. You’re a Christian, an Easternern. By understanding our<\/div>\n
differences, we can build unity in our country.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For today’s ruling political elites and pretenders of “One Nigeria,”<\/div>\n
without Justice, Equity and Fairness, be properly guided that the<\/div>\n
hydra-headed, age-long issues of Rotational Leadership led to the<\/div>\n
establishment\u00a0 of today’s six geo-political zones in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At the constitutional conference inaugurated by former Head of State,<\/div>\n
Gen. Sanni Abacha on June 27, 1994 and chaired by Justice Adolphus<\/div>\n
Karibi-Whyte, Second Republic Vice President Alex Ekwueme had sold the<\/div>\n
idea of six geo-political zones to members of Constitutional Conference.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Despite its initial rejection, Gen. Abacha would later make an<\/div>\n
announcement in 1995, dividing Nigeria into six geo-political zones,<\/div>\n
which exists till date:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
– South West<\/div>\n
– South East<\/div>\n
– South South<\/div>\n
– North West<\/div>\n
– North East<\/div>\n
– North Central.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Howbeit, in the thinking of the ruling political elites at the time,<\/div>\n
dividing Nigeria into six geo-political zones would entrench Justice,<\/div>\n
Equity & Fairness in the distribution of political power, economic<\/div>\n
resources, among others.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At the time, it was viewed that doing so would gift Nigeria and<\/div>\n
Nigerians Palpable Peace, National Unity, Cohesion and Inclusiveness.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At that Abacha’s Constitutional Conference, Mkpoko Igbo; Councils of<\/div>\n
Obas of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun & Ondo States of Nigeria,’ et al, had in<\/div>\n
their memoranda, proposed that Political Power rotates among the six<\/div>\n
geo-political zones.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In what Chief Olabode George, ex-Military Governor of Ondo State and<\/div>\n
former Chairman of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), described as<\/div>\n
“Democracy based on turn by turn Nigeria Limited.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Meanwhile, before his demise on June 8, 1998, the Abacha regime made key<\/div>\n
decisions out of the recommendations of the Constitutional Conference.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
3 Key Government Decisions Of The Constitutional Conference:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1. Offices of the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Deputy<\/div>\n
Prime Minister, Senate President and House Speaker should be rotated<\/div>\n
among the 6 geo-political zones. The Independent National Electoral<\/div>\n
Commission (INEC) will determine how?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
2. The Power Sharing arrangement at the Federal level shall be<\/div>\n
entrenched in Nigeria’s 1998\/1999 Constitution.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
3. The Power Sharing arrangement shall be applicable for an experimental<\/div>\n
period of 30 (thirty) years.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Before government made its decision, the conference prescribed a single<\/div>\n
term of five years for the President, arguing that this would encourage<\/div>\n
each zone to be patient and wait for its turn.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Former President Goodluck Jonathan made same suggestion while in office,<\/div>\n
but was brutally vilified.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Me thinks, had Nigeria implemented the above recommendations on return<\/div>\n
to civil rule in 1999, by 2029, all six geo-political zones would have<\/div>\n
produced Nigeria’s President, including Vice President, Senate President<\/div>\n
and House Speaker.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Today’s bad blood arising from whose turn it is to produce the President<\/div>\n
would have\u00a0 been lessoned.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
That said, ahead of #NigeriaDecides2023, it must be reiterated to those<\/div>\n
who feign ignorance or are political correct about the prevalent<\/div>\n
socio-political circumstances in Nigeria, that the North\/South dichotomy<\/div>\n
is real. It’s existed even dating back pre-Independence.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Nigeria’s ruling political elites from the\u00a0 Independence Era, until this<\/div>\n
present day had only managed our differences via jaw-jaws,<\/div>\n
constitutional conferences, political compromises, horse-tradings,<\/div>\n
consultations, meetings, et al.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Ahead of #NigeriaDecides2023, after 8 years of the President Muhammadu<\/div>\n
Buhari’s Northern Presidency by May 29, 2023, one expects the Atiku<\/div>\n
Abubakars of this world, the Bukola Sarakis, the Aminu Tambuwals, and<\/div>\n
other Northern politicians from across Nigeria’s major political<\/div>\n
parties, to give Reason a chance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Considering Nigeria’s multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious<\/div>\n
colourations, one expects the Northern Political Machine, et al, to<\/div>\n
throw their weight behind an experienced reformer from the Southern<\/div>\n
region (South East in particular), from within the ruling All<\/div>\n
Progressives Congress (APC) and\/or the main opposition Peoples<\/div>\n
Democratic Party (PDP).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I, reiterate, ahead of #NigeriaDecides2023, for palpable peace, justice<\/div>\n
and equity, all Nigerians should throw their weight behind an<\/div>\n
experienced reformer from the South East, not philosophes acquainted<\/div>\n
with man only as they see him in their books and not in the world, nor<\/div>\n
scoundrels of wicked principles and desperate fortunes, hoping to<\/div>\n
pillage something in the wreck of their country.<\/div>\n
