Our attention has been drawn to the latest epistle by Dakuku Peterside<\/div>\n
titled: “Wike\u2019s Displacement Of .1m Rivers People Wicked, Evil,<\/div>\n
Inhuman -Dakuku Peterside… Plans\u00a0 To Convert Waterfront\u00a0 To Personal<\/div>\n
Ownership”, and once again we are amazed by the kindergarten mischief<\/div>\n
and the usual spurious, illogical and unsubstantiated attention seeking<\/div>\n
allegations, which have become the hallmarks of his less than edifying<\/div>\n
public posts.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We are even more amused by the concerted effort and deliberate intent<\/div>\n
with which Dakuku Peterside continues to draw attention to his obviously<\/div>\n
unfortunate loss of memory and dislocated bearing, less than six years<\/div>\n
after the administration he served in, left Rivers State reeling and in<\/div>\n
doldrums, after they were roundly and comprehensively booted out in in<\/div>\n
2015.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dakuku’s latest bellyaching over the determined effort of the Rivers<\/div>\n
State Government to sanitize the waterfronts by removing all shanties<\/div>\n
and most especially, continue with its frontal and hugely successful war<\/div>\n
to rid Rivers State of dangerous criminals and undesirable elements who<\/div>\n
have transformed these Waterfronts into a den of thieves, flies in the<\/div>\n
face of rational analysis, especially by one who sees himself as a<\/div>\n
leadership expert.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dakuku Peterside will not feign ignorance of the fact that the<\/div>\n
demolition of waterfronts to rid Rivers State of criminals did not start<\/div>\n
with Governor Nyesom Wike’s administration.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Infact, the Vanguard Newspaper, August 24, 2012, captured a particularly<\/div>\n
\u201cwicked, evil and inhuman,\u201d (to borrow Peterside’s choice of words),<\/div>\n
thus: “On Tuesday and Wednesday, June 26 and 27, 2012, the government of<\/div>\n
Rivers State mobilized some earth-moving equipment to Abonnema Wharf to<\/div>\n
demolish all houses and destroy property, thereby rendering a community<\/div>\n
of about 10,000 people homeless. Men, women, children were under heavy<\/div>\n
rain with their property.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This act of the Rivers State Government is inhuman, oppressive,<\/div>\n
heartless, and an abuse of right to shelter. Abonnema Wharf is one of<\/div>\n
the over 40 waterfronts communities scattered across Port Harcourt, the<\/div>\n
capital of Rivers State, which houses over 80 per cent of the city<\/div>\n
residents.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“The State Government has brandished the communities as nests of<\/div>\n
criminals that must be demolished. Governor Rotimi Amaechi claimed that<\/div>\n
the demolition is part of the urban renewal policy and also to check<\/div>\n
activities of criminally-minded individuals who use the water-fronts as<\/div>\n
operational bases.” Please note the date.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We are even at a loss to fathom how Dakuku Peterside could so quickly<\/div>\n
have forgotten that his APC govt not only demolished Abonnema Water<\/div>\n
front, but also Njemanze, Elechi Beach and Nanka waterfronts.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dakuku Peterside even went ahead in his puerile epistle to state<\/div>\n
shamelessly that: “shelter was a right and fundamental to the welfare,<\/div>\n
survival and health of man and Governor Wike\u2019s action against the<\/div>\n
waterfront residents is against all Universal Laws and Conventions on<\/div>\n
Human Rights and Habitation, including the United Nations Human<\/div>\n
Settlement Programme, UN-Habitat, United Nations Housing Rights<\/div>\n
Programme, UNHRP, the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the<\/div>\n
1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and<\/div>\n
Nigeria\u2019s Policy on Housing”; as if these organizations and statutes<\/div>\n
did not exist in 2012 when his administration was destroying Abonnema<\/div>\n
Wharf waterfront and all the others.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Of course nobody accused the then Governor of plans to convert those<\/div>\n
Waterfronts to personal use, so why is Dakuku Peterside now speaking<\/div>\n
from both sides of his mouth? This hypocrisy by Dakuku and his ilk is<\/div>\n
simply getting too much.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
To set the records straight, Governor Nyesom Wike, in his New year 2022<\/div>\n
message to Rivers People, stated clearly, amongst other far reaching<\/div>\n
measures to curtail the activities of criminals in the state, that:<\/div>\n
“Indeed, there is no denying the fact that crime and criminality have<\/div>\n
been at very low rates in Rivers State and citizens felt safer and more<\/div>\n
secure in 2021 than the previous years.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“With the cooperation of the security agencies we identified and<\/div>\n
destroyed most of the shanties that hitherto served as safe havens and<\/div>\n
hideouts for criminals, who have now been dislodged and dislocated from<\/div>\n
the State having lost the space and capacity from which they could<\/div>\n
operate with ease.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“To consolidate on the gains of the dislodgement and dislocation<\/div>\n
exercises, and make the State even safer and more secure, we have<\/div>\n
decided to demolish all shanties and makeshift structures in identified<\/div>\n
crime hotspots in Port Harcourt Township and the Illoabuchi areas of<\/div>\n
Diobu from the second week of January 2022.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Rivers people will recall even, that in August 2015, the Rivers State<\/div>\n
Government signed into law, the Anti-kidnapping bill, which was later<\/div>\n
amended in 2018, and from which the authority to move in and destroy<\/div>\n
everything that aids and promotes criminality in the State, including<\/div>\n
residences and hideouts, is derived.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Subsequently, a robust and determined action plan has been deployed to<\/div>\n
destroy criminal hideouts, shanties and makeshift structures located in<\/div>\n
notoriously infiltrated areas along Elele to Ahoada expanse of the<\/div>\n
East-West Road, Onne, Eleme and other flashpoint areas.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Of course, nobody accused the Governor at that time, of plans to convert<\/div>\n
these areas to personal ownership, but now that Government’s efforts<\/div>\n
have yielded tremendous success, to the point that even criminals were<\/div>\n
already coming to terms with the reality that Rivers State was too hot<\/div>\n
for them, the detractors have come up with another misleading slant and<\/div>\n
narrative to bad mouth the pragmatic, focused and unrelenting actions of<\/div>\n
Governor Wike in ridding the state of criminals and maintaining the<\/div>\n
sustainable peace and security which the state is enjoying presently.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We must stress categorically here that Governor Wike is not one to play<\/div>\n
to the gallery or engage in deceitful, populist grandstanding where<\/div>\n
important issues are concerned.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He has always believed firmly in the principle that whatever is worth<\/div>\n
doing at all in the interest and welfare of the people, is worth doing<\/div>\n
well and that is why he will go to great lengths and most times with<\/div>\n
admirable courage and fearlessness, no matter whose ox is gored, to<\/div>\n
ensure that the right thing is not only done, but is seen to be done<\/div>\n
practically.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Governor Nyesom Wike is far bigger than what people like Dakuku<\/div>\n
Peterside will say and no amount of distraction by those who cry<\/div>\n
crocodile tears over the action to dislodge criminals from the state and<\/div>\n
have refused to remove the log in their own eyes for political reasons,<\/div>\n
will deter or dissuade him from his avowed commitment to deliver<\/div>\n
quality, functional and result oriented leadership and governance to<\/div>\n
Rivers people.<\/div>\n
