Akwa Ibom State governor,\u00a0 Dec. Udom Emmanuel has blamed witches and wizards in the state for hindering the progression of the works embarked upon by his government<\/p>\n
Giving reasons why some important projects are yet to be completed in the state, Gov Emmanuel, while appearing in a phone-in programme, \u201cThe Governor Speaks\u201d on the state-owned station, Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC), on Saturday, particularly blamed the non-completion of the N10 billion International Worship Centre in Uyo on the witches and wizards who dragged him and the government to court to stop the construction of the worship center.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll (the) witches and wizards came together and took me to court that we are building a Christian Worship Center,\u201d the governor said on Saturday at a media chat that was broadcast live on radio and television.<\/p>\n
The programme was also streamed live on Facebook.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey say they are atheists. The case is in the court, we won them but they have appealed,\u201d the governor added.<\/p>\n
The Akwa Abasi Ibom governor, who recently hand-picked one of his cabinet members as his preferred successor in the 2023 governorship election, was responding to a reporter\u2019s question if God truly revealed to him his successor as he claimed.<\/p>\n
While answering the question, he veered off to talk about how \u201cwitches\u201d sued him and the government.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommunication between a leader and God is different from what any other person would see or understand, people must understand that,\u201d Mr Emmanuel said about God \u201crevealing\u201d who should succeed him as governor.<\/p>\n
The governor\u2019s remark about \u201cwitches\u201d appeared to have overshadowed all the other things he said about his administration, as several people from the state took to Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to talk about \u201cwitches\u201d.<\/p>\n
One of Mr Emmanuel\u2019s aides, Aniekeme Finbarr, quickly took to Facebook to offer clarifications to the governor\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n
Mr Finbarr said Mr Emmanuel was referring to a lawsuit filed by the Atheist Society of Nigeria against the Akwa Ibom State Government in 2019 to stop the government from building the worship centre.<\/p>\n
The court had dismissed the suit and awarded a N500,000 cost against the atheist society.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sounds extremely funny but it is true. There are actually real legal attempts to stop the building project,\u201d Mr Finbarr said.<\/p>\n
According to Nigeria\u2019s criminal law, it is an offence to accuse any person of being a witch.<\/p>\n
Akwa Ibom, with about five million population, is predominantly Christian, with many holding superstitious beliefs and attributing almost every occurrence, including ill-health, job loss, and a failed marriage, to some \u201cevil forces\u201d.<\/p>\n
Children in the state, mostly from poor families, have been branded witches, kicked out into the street, while some have been tortured and left to die.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
