{"id":94372,"date":"2022-04-27T18:58:10","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T17:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=94372"},"modified":"2022-04-27T18:58:10","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T17:58:10","slug":"terrorism-act-senate-prohibits-ransom-payment-to-kidnappers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/terrorism-act-senate-prohibits-ransom-payment-to-kidnappers\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrorism Act: Senate prohibits ransom payment to kidnappers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013, which will prohibit the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The passage of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013 (Amendment) Bill, 2022, followed the consideration of a report by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe report was laid by the Committee\u2019s Chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), before consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Bamidele, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to outlaw the payment of ransom to abductors, kidnappers, and terrorists for the release of any person who has been wrongfully confined, imprisoned, or kidnapped.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nAccording to the lawmaker, \u201cthe overall import of this bill is to discourage the rising spate of kidnapping and abduction for ransom In Nigeria, which is fast spreading across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that in the memoranda presented to the Committee, the plethora of issues relating to the subject matter of terrorism and terrorism financing in line with global best practices were raised.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nHe assured that the amendment to the Terrorism Act would set standards and regulatory system intended to prevent terrorist groups from laundering money through the banking system and other financial networks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013, which will prohibit the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria.
