{"id":95179,"date":"2022-05-21T23:24:15","date_gmt":"2022-05-21T22:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=95179"},"modified":"2022-05-21T23:24:15","modified_gmt":"2022-05-21T22:24:15","slug":"catholic-priest-suspended-for-joining-2023-benue-governorship-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/catholic-priest-suspended-for-joining-2023-benue-governorship-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic priest suspended for joining 2023 Benue Governorship race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1733467960673658109\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Catholic Diocese of Gboko in Benue State has suspended a priest, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, for joining the governorship race in the state.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nAlia had picked up the N50m governorship form of the All Progressives Congress and had been cleared by the ruling party to participate alongside 11 successful aspirants in the party\u2019s primary.<\/p>\n<p>But the Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Gboko, William Avenya, in a letter dated May 20, 2022, announced the suspension of Alia from public ministry \u201cafter series of admonitions\u201d to him.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Avenya noted in the letter sighted that \u201cthe Mother Church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The letter partly read, \u201cI write to communicate to you the suspension of my priest, Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia from public ministry after series of admonitions to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mother Church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are aware that my son, your brother and your priest has purchased the party forms to contest for the Office of the Governor of Benue State under the All Progressives\u2019 Congress which is totally against our vocation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, to respond to the spiritual and pastoral needs of the Church in the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, I have suspended him from the exercise of sacred ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis canonical suspension takes effect from the moment it is communicated to him and lasts until he ceases from contumacy.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Catholic Diocese of Gboko in Benue State has suspended a priest, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, for joining the governorship race in the state.
