{"id":95908,"date":"2022-06-11T15:25:41","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T14:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=95908"},"modified":"2022-06-11T15:25:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T14:25:41","slug":"alleged-50m-fraud-sale-of-assets-wike-orders-trial-of-amaechi-cole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/alleged-50m-fraud-sale-of-assets-wike-orders-trial-of-amaechi-cole\/","title":{"rendered":"Alleged $50m Fraud\/Sale of Assets: Wike Orders Trial of Amaechi, Cole"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1735348057892001711\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State yesterday ordered the prosecution of the immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi and the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Tonye Cole, over their alleged involvement \u201cin the illegal sale of a number of state government\u2019s assets and disappearance of $50 million from the state\u2019s account without proof of where it was deployed.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nWike gave the order after swearing-in three new commissioners at the Government House, Port Harcourt.<\/p>\n<p>The Rivers State Governor had in 2015 set up a Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate the activities of the Amaechi administration and the panel thereafter indicted Amaechi, Cole and some others for corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Wike directed the state\u2019s new Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zaccheus Adangor, to commence prosecution of the two men and the others immediately.<\/p>\n<p>However, analysts are of the view that the drive to prosecute Amaechi and Cole is aimed at making the APC governorship candidate unelectable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce Cole is put on trial, and obviously will be convicted, his drive to become Rivers State governor ends,\u201d said the analysts.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Wike told his new Attorney General: \u201cYou\u2019re at a critical period where people want to know what the state is going to do with the Judiciary Panel of Inquiry after the Supreme Court judgement on it. Luckily, you came at the right time when we had preferred criminal charges against the former governor (Amaechi), Sahara Energy\u2019s Tonye Cole and the rest of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, you are coming at the right time to take over the matter and to make sure it is prosecuted diligently. I don\u2019t want to hear excuses. Let the people see what happened to our money. The world will see how $50 million from our account was moved to a company without nothing to show whether there was a business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor had last month stated that he may file charges against the former Minister of Transportation, following the Supreme Court judgment that dismissed Amaechi\u2019s appeal to frustrate investigation into activities of his administration.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile, Wike yesterday stated that the attempt by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest the state\u2019s PDP governorship candidate, Siminalaye Fubara, would not be accepted, saying that the state government would not hesitate to charge the anti-craft agency for contempt.<\/p>\n<p>Wike also directed Adangor to write a strong worded protest letter to the EFCC over the alleged harassment of Fubara.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the protest letter is predicated on the recent attempted arrest by officers of EFCC on Fubara, who he noted before his emergence as the PDP governorship candidate, had served as the Accountant General of Rivers State.<\/p>\n<p>Wike said the era of impunity and flagrant disobedience to the rule of law is gone and his administration will not accept such action by EFCC.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that before now, the Rivers State government had gotten a subsisting court judgment against the EFCC that it cannot investigate the state finances or its officers.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there is also another judgment against EFCC by the PDP governorship candidate to enforce his fundamental rights, which has not been set aside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State yesterday ordered the prosecution of the immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi and the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":95909,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-95908","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-exclusive"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
