{"id":95954,"date":"2022-06-13T08:29:23","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T07:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=95954"},"modified":"2022-06-13T08:29:23","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T07:29:23","slug":"nigeria-still-practicing-elitist-democracy-says-ohanaeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/nigeria-still-practicing-elitist-democracy-says-ohanaeze\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Still Practicing Elitist Democracy, Says Ohanaeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m2762788184211992614\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apex Igbo social-cultural organisation,\u00a0 Ohanaeze Ndigbo has declared that though Nigeria is celebrating 23 years of civilian rule, it was still practicing elitist democracy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nThe spokesman of Ohanaeze, Alex Ogbonnia, stated this in Enugu while reacting to June 12 Democracy Day celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Ogbonnia said though he was happy that Nigeria was celebrating 23 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, it was yet to practice real democracy where the masses will participate in governance.<\/p>\n<p>He decried the high cost of the nomination forms of political parties and high cost of campaigns in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ogbonnia said the high cost of nomination forms and campaigns was capable of\u00a0 making winners embark on primitive accumulation of wealth.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohanaeze spokesman further decried the wide gap between the rich and poor in the country, saying because of the gap, the elites determine the voting pattern, saying the sad development is not how democracy is practiced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy that Nigeria is celebrating 23 years of civilian rule but in the real sense, what Nigeria is practicing is elitist democracy.
