{"id":96534,"date":"2022-06-29T17:56:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T16:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=96534"},"modified":"2022-06-29T17:56:44","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T16:56:44","slug":"n100-bribe-rivers-policeman-bags-death-sentence-for-killing-driver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/n100-bribe-rivers-policeman-bags-death-sentence-for-killing-driver\/","title":{"rendered":"N100 bribe: Rivers policeman bags death sentence for killing driver"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">A High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Tuesday, sentenced a dismissed policeman, James Imhalu, to death by hanging for the murder of a commercial driver in 2015, over his refusal to pay him a N100 bribe.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Elsie Thompson while delivering her judgment said evidence before the court showed that the sacked Sergeant intentionally fired a shot at the commercial driver, Legbara David at Whimpey junction in Port Harcourt.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Thompson described Imhalu as a serial trigger-happy policeman that should not be allowed to remain in the society.<\/p>\n<p>One of the counsel to the prosecution team, Kingsley Briggs, said the judgement would serve as succour to the deceased family.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cWe thank God that today judgement has been given. Although the will of justice grinds slowly, but surely justice will come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the family of those that lost their loved one and their breadwinner, it is quite unfortunate, But, I believe this judgement will serve as a succour to the family.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cHe will be taken to the correctional centre and then to His Excellency. If His Excellency signs and gives the order, he will be executed accordingly,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, a representative of the legal aid council in Rivers State,\u00a0 who defended the sergeant, Mr Awaji, said they would study the judgement to know the next line of action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came into the matter at the point of defense. The state has called all the numerous witnesses. Today\u2019s judgement, I will say, is justice for the people of Rivers State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the fact that I represented the defendant, my analysis of the case when I came into the matter, I would say, I saw it coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving listened to the judgement, currently there is no plan to go on appeal.
