Over 200 families have been rendered homeless\u00a0 as flood wrecked 3 communities in Nkporo land, Ohafia council Local Government Area of Abia state.<\/p>\n
The affected communities; Okwoko Nkporo, Agbaja Nkporo and Ukwa Nkporo, are now deserted as the families can no longer access their homes which have been taken over by flood.<\/p>\n
Sources told Pointblanknews.com that the rampaging flood followed the overflowing of the Ironyi River which cuts across Nkporo land.<\/p>\n
Traditional Rulers of the communities; Eze Ambassador Arunsi Nwankwo Uka ; Eze Ojukwu Imo Kalu and Ezeogo Mba Nkuma, who spoke during the visit of the Abia State Deputy Governor, Chief Ude Oko Chukwu, to the communities, stated that though nobody died in the flood, they lost their properties including household items ,goods for sale, farmlands and buildings.<\/p>\n
The monarchs lamented that despite the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) and the Abia State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA,) ignored several letters made to them over the problem of flooding in the Nkporo communities.<\/p>\n
\u201c137 buildings from five compounds and shopping plaza were affected in Ukwa Nkporo with 61 buildings from six compounds of Okwoko Nkporo while 25 buildings from six compounds were affected in Agbaja Nkporo as a result of the flood that ravaged the communities. We have written several letters to both NEMA and SEMA and other related agencies but nothing was done to the problem of flooding in Nkporo. But we are optimistic that with the state government’s visit, a lasting solution will be found,\u201d the monarchs noted.<\/p>\n
Abia State Deputy Governor, Chief Ude Oko Chukwu , who expressed shock after assessing the damages caused by the flood, promised that the government will work out modalities to dredge the Ironyi River to forestall\u00a0 the recurrence of flooding in the area.<\/p>\n
He explained that dredging of the Irony river is the only the permanent solution to the flood and pledged the readiness of the state government to reduce the sufferings of the people in such situations that negatively affect the lives of the citizenry.<\/p>\n
While thanking God that no life was lost in the flood, the Deputy Governor promised that the government will do the needful to ameliorate their losses.<\/p>\n
