Ogun NUJ raises alarm over plot to assassinate 8 of its members
Nigeria Union of Journalists {NUJ} Ogun State Council yesterday raised
alarm over alleged plot by some faceless assassins to eliminate eight
journalists from the print media who are correspondents for their various
establishments
In view of this, the council had written a petition to the Ogun State
Police Command calling on the authority to come to the safety of the
targeted newsmen, as the body said it is still disturbed over the attempt
ugly development.
‘This is to inform you that eight of our members from Ogun State Council
of Nigeria Union of Journalists{NUJ}, have been marked for elimination by
unknown assassins for reasons yet to be ascertained’ the petition signed
by Wole Shokunbi secretary of the council stated.
The petition listed the names of the targeted journalists as include;
Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji of Next Newspapers, Ernest Nwokolo{The
Nation},Demola Oni{Punch}, Moshood Adebayo{The Sun}, Jaiye
Andrews{Thisday}, Dayo Rufai{Encomium}and Kolade Larewaju{Vanguard}
The council said the petition became necessary in order not to leave any
chances, ‘in any rumour there is always element of truth. We are using
this medium by calling on you to use your good office to look into this
issue with the utmost urgency it deserves’ the body plea with
commissioner of police.
The petition emphasized further that journalists in Ogun State are law
abiding people who have been discharging their traditional function
without fear or favour, ‘we have never engaged in blackmail and have
always been accurate, objective and sincere in reportage of events’
The council further posited that, ‘also our constructive criticisms have
helped in nurturing the country into the present democratic dispensation;
we are appealing to your command to save our soul from this scenario’
