In fulfillment of his promise to immortalize the late Legal Luminary,
Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi with a comprehensive Diagnostic Centre
that would cater for the early detection and treatment of diseases,
the ground breaking of a Comprehensive Diagnostic Centre worth
$5.2million (about N780 million) named after Fawehinmi, whose
posthumous 72nd birthday anniversary comes up, April 22, will be
performed by the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko tomorrow
(Thursday).
The Centre which is located along the Laje Road in Gani Fawehinmi’s
hometown in Ondo, according to a release issued by the Chief Press
Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi in Akure on Wednesday,
would, when completed, compete with any Diagnostic Centre anywhere all
over the world. It is aimed at, among others; assist in the early
detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer which Gani
Fawehinmi died of.
The release revealed that the Gani Fawehinmi’s Diagnostic Centre is
one of Dr Olusegun Mimiko’s administration determination to wage war
against untimely death in the society and in partial fulfillment of
his Administration’s promise to provide the best health care
facilities for the people of Ondo State on assumption of office in
February last year.
Governor Mimiko had last September during a State burial organized for the
late Gani while lamenting death of the social crusader, whom he described
as a quintessential Ondo person, an epitome of the omoluwabi ethos for
which the Ondo people in particular and the Yoruba in general are
noted for, due to cancer had promised to set up a Diagnostic centre
that would be named after him.
The Governor had regretted that if the Cancer which eventually killed
the late Gani had been detected early and treated, the late Lawyer of
no mean repute would have lived many more fruitful years to the
service of man and God. He thus blamed the parlous state of the
nation’s health sector for Gani Fawehinmi’s death with a resolve to
reverse the trend with a a comprehensive Diagnostic Centre that would
not only be named after Fawehinmi but would be sited in his (Gani’s)
hometown.
The ceremony would be graced by important dignitaries from far and
wide including the children and family of the late Legal luminary.
