Ferguson set to leave United...Maurinho top list of replacement
MANCHESTER UNITED have begun the search for their next manager after Alex Ferguson told the board: "One more season and I'm out."
Fergie will go in the summer of 2011, six months before his 70th birthday.
But Old Trafford sources insist his replacement has yet to be decided.
United are canvassing opinion among leading football figures about who would be the best man for the job and Fergie will also have an input.
Jose Mourinho, currently in charge of Inter Milan, is the favourite.
However, there are those at United who are not convinced that he is the right man.
On the one hand the former Chelsea boss has a proven track record for winning titles and could clinch a second Champions League this season.
However he is seen as a short-term type of boss who is always looking to the next job.
Ferguson has built a dynasty at Old Trafford stretching over 25 years.
The ideal next manager would be a man who could put in another long shift and give the club stability.
Mourinho is just about to complete his second season at Inter but has been making noises about leaving.
He wants to try his luck in Spain because it is his big ambition to win titles in the three major leagues in world football.
And he is driven to show those at Barcelona who nicknamed him "The Interpreter" from his time as Bobby Robson's assistant that he has what it takes to win La Liga.
Ironically Barca boss Pep Guardiola is one of those who will be on United's radar along with the likes of England boss Fabio Capello, Guus Hiddink, Martin O'Neill and Arsene Wenger.
