By MOSHOOD FAYEMIWO

Continued from Chapter Ten

CHAPTER ELEVEN

MKO ABIOLA JOINED THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE

“Character is like a tree, and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it, the tree is the real thing.” -Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

General Ibrahim Babangida came to power with the intention to break records, to become the first military leader to transmutate himself into a civilian President. He had courted the friendships of other African Heads of State who employed this method to rule their respective nations with iron fists. He was a close chum of President Gnassingbe Eyadema, the late Master-Sergeant-turned civilian president of impoverished Togo where his son is now in charge turning the poor nation into a family fiefdom after the late Eyadema had ruined Togo for over 35 years; He learned some funny tricks from late Master-Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe, the youthful rascal who misruled his country for ten years and plunged the West African nation into a bloody civil war which claimed nearly one million lives until Liberians took charge of their lives. He was already a close buddy to President Jerry John Rawlings, the doyen of military coup plotting in West Africa. Rawlings staged three coups in Ghana, the last one against the people of black Africa’s first independent nation and ruled for nearly twenty years before he ceded the stage in 2000 but at least Rawlings turned Ghana around during those years.

If Babangida would not succeed in that venture because Nigerians are contumacious and won’t tolerate such idiocy from any bloody soldier, he would toy with the idea of diarchy, a form of government where a civilian President shares power with a military Head of State. That was why he sent some military leaders to Cairo, Egypt and Santiago, the Republic of Chile in 1988 led by Col. Anthony Nyiam to go and study how the late Army General Augusto Pinochet introduced diarchy into Chile after the ruthless general was planted by the America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 1971 after he planned a coup d’état which killed Dr Salvadore Allende, the democratically-elected president of the Republic of Chile for turning Chile into s socialist state. The money used to stage the coup by Pinochet was provided by the International Telephone and Telegraph Incorporation (ITT), the same way Dr Patrice Lumumba was brutally slaughtered by the late Master-Sergeant, Joseph Desiree Mobutu who later changed his name to Mobutu Sese Zeko of the Democratic Republic of The Congo (Zaire) in 1961.It was because of this plan of Babangida that pushed Col. Nyiam to lead the abortive coup of April 22, 1990 against Babangida so the diarchy that Babangida dreamt of would not materialize.

The transition to civil rule program that Gen. Ibrahim Babangida hurriedly announced after the abortive Gideon Orkar coup was a response to the serious fundamental issues and problems bordering on the corporate survival of Nigeria as one nation raised by the patriotic young men who planned the April 22, 1990 coup. But the civil rule program unfurled by the evil general was a political 419. His main objective was to discredit the politicians, drain them………………….
