Mimiko’s wife vows to uplift women
Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Mimiko on Thursday decried the Spate of physical and psychological abuses being encountered by women in Nigeria with a solemn pledge to work for the upliftment of the womenfolk.
Mrs. Mimiko in her maiden official assignment since the enthronement of her husband, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, as the Governor of Ondo State at this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration called for a concerted efforts towards alleviating the plight of women in our society. While noting that the theme of this year’s celebration tagged:“End violence against women,” was very instructive, Mrs. Mimiko urged all nations to put in place policies and programmes to promote equality of men and women in all sphere of human endeavours.
While disclosing that the present administration recognizes the fact that African women suffer from many disadvantages ab\nd bare the greatest brunt of poverty, she stated emphatically that this government would ensure the transformation of the sate of women “from this fundamental position of disadvantage, without necessarily upturning the more valuable aspects of our culture”.
According to her, it was an established fact that women empowerment” us one of the surest jets to rapid socio economic development. This administration shall therefore embark on a sustainable women empowerment programme as a plank to the overall development of our society .”
She also express the determination of the Mimiko administration to ensure that a fairly large number of women are appointed into government positions. Mrs. Mimiko however admonished women to embrace all the laudable programmes to be put in place by the government as well as seize the diverse opportunities aimed at improving the quality of life of the people
