Mimiko promises to uplift Judiciary
Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has assured the State judiciary of improved and conducive working environment, adding that the judiciary as the last hope of the masses would be well funded to ensure quick and effective dispensation of justice.
Governor Mimiko, who gave the assurance in his speech at a Special Court Sitting in honour of late Justice Peter Idowu Odunwo at the High Court Complex in Akure, appreciated the significant contribution of the judiciary to the sustainability of the nation’s democracy.
He added that the current development in the nation’s judiciary has deepened the confidence reposed in the system by the people of the country, noting that the state judiciary would be encouraged to perform according to the expectation of law and wishes of the people.
The Governor, who explained that government realizes the tedious nature of the task ahead of the judiciary said “as government we will make your job less stressful, and we‘ll try to make you an envy for your colleagues in the country”.
Dr Mimko described the late Judge as a patriotic, loving and excellent Jurist, who had spent his lifetime for the development of his community and promotion of his chosen profession.
While commiserating with the state judiciary, Dr Mimiko however pledged the support of the state government for members of the family he left behind.
In her valedictory address, the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Gladys Olateru-Olagbegi, described the late Judge as a very pleasant person, who had a deep knowledge of law and applied it compassionately in the discharge of justice.
Justice Olagbegi however urged the family of late Justice Odunwo to seek solace in the good legacy left behind by their benefactor and be rest assured that the state judiciary would not forget them.
Born on 3 rd December 1950, Late Justice Peter Odunwo hailed from Okitipupa, in Okitipupa local government area of the state. After completing his primary and post-primary education in Okitipupa, he proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where he read law in 1982 and was called to the bar in 1983.
Late Justice Odunwo, until his appointment as a judge in the Ondo State Judiciary in 1998 was the principal partner at Omobamowo Law Chambers at Okitipupa.
