Dear Editor,

Yar'Adua, Jonathan and Egwu were University lecturers

I wonder why unnecessary and avoidable situations that constitute cog in the wheel of Nigeria progress should be given a chance. The Federal government had gone into a renegotiated agreement with the ASUU late last year and more than seven months after, it has failed to abide by what it signed.

A one-week warning strike was embarked upon by the ASUU about a month ago and upon that the government did not take that as a reminder that there is something that was agreed to and needed some attention. Could this be a callous government?

What baffles me most is that the trio (Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, the President, Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, the Vice President and Dr. Sam Egwu, the Minister for Education) were all University lecturers who are supposed to understand the plight and necessity of the need of the lecturers thereby ensuring that an agreement entered into were abided with. When they were at the other side of the divide as lecturers themselves, one could imagine how vocal and supportive they were in the long-aged fight.

Now they have agreed that our children should go back home and on the streets wasting precious time and getting lured into vices that would not make them good leaders tomorrow. If closely monitored you would find out that children of the trio who may still at university level are overseas enjoying uninterrupted education time-table.

The federal government must wear a human face in this matter and stop deceiving the masses and creating unnecessary tensions. It has a lot in its hands already going against it. The President and his Minister for Education should not delay one bit in solving this unnecessary disruption of our children’s education.
