Dear Editor,
The murder of the Ekpenyong brothers in Uyo
Hon Fabian Ekpenyong, said to be a brother to the slain Ekpenyongs, could give a possible lead to those who killed his brothers. Fabian Ekpenyong was quoted in the various newspapers of Wednesday June 24, 2009 while accounting for the death of the brothers that they were killed by kidnappers and not assassins.
This is the more reason Fabian should be further quizzed by the investigating authorities for more facts as it is possible that he knew those behind the dastardly act. According to the newspaper reports which quoted him extensively, he said that he has been deputy chairman of Uyo local government for thirteen months and therefore, if it were to be political assassination, it should have been him as the victim and not his dead brothers.
Nevertheless, the assassinated Ekpenyongs were said to be close associates of the former FCT Minister of State and the erstwhile Director of Governor Akpabio’s campaign organization, Senator James Akpanudoedeghe. The Senator had recently accused the Governor of sponsoring political kidnapping and terrorism in Akwa Ibom State. He also accused his government of sponsoring the group that recently attempted to kidnap his (James) mother.
However, it is suspected neither many criminal (kidnap and assassination) cases, up till today remain either resolved or the perpetrators apprehended. In some cases the government had been accused of paying ransom to kidnappers.
