American Idol to pay Simon Cowell $144million to stay on the show
SIMON Cowell could be paid up to $144million (£87.6million) a year to stay in American Idol, it has been claimed.
Sources say the music mogul has been offered three or four times the $36million (£21.9million) he reportedly made for starring as a judge on the show last year.
That amount is just a fraction of the estimated $900million (£547million) the programme rakes in each year.
Cowell's contract expires next May and telly chiefs are apparently desperate to keep him on the show.
The mega-rich star is set to boost is earning power even further, with plans to launch a multi-billion-dollar entertainment conglomerate alongside business legend Sir Philip Green.
Fox, the channel behind the series in the US, declined to comment on salary negotiations.
