Ex-IG Ehindero In Another Shocking N2.5 Billion Scandal

For Nigeria’s immediate past Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, the moment of reckoning may have come only a week after retiring as the head of the Nigeria Police about N200 Million were recovered from him. Now, pointblanknews has uncovered the grand father of all improprieties purportedly perpetrated by the same embattled former Police czar.

Our investigations revealed that their were incongruous sharp practices with police ethics and rules of engagements in the diversion of about N2.5 Billion (about $20Million) police cooperative funds to various banks in Nigeria by the Ex-Police boss.

It would be recalled that Tafa Balogun, immediate predecessor of Ehindero was removed from office on allegations of graft and theft running into several Billions of Naira. He was prosecuted and sentenced to a laughable jail term making the world to accuse the regime of Olusegun Obasanjo of unserious ness in the fight against corruption.

Pointblanknews learnt from highly places polices sources that Ehindero promoted John Olaniyi, his kinsman to a Commissioner of Police against police rules and assigned him in charge of Finance and Budget who later became a conduit pipe for all the illegal financial transactions carried out by Ehindero team.

Specifically, investigations revealed that it was Olaniyi on the orders of Ehindero who made lodgments of about N2.5 Billion of the Police Funds into private accounts with names of Ehindero’s family members and close associates and aides.

It was learnt that upon the arrest of Olaniyi and his confession over the N200 Million found with him, frantic moves were said to have been made by Ehindero to move the N2.5 Billion Police funds from private banks where they have been lodged for about a year.

President Musa Yar’Adua promised in Germany at the G8 Summit that his administration will continue the war against corruption, promising to use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to fight corruption. His attention was drawn to plans by ex-governors and top officials of the last administration who are trying to escape from the country to avoid persecution for corruption and abuse of office.

It is not clear if his commitment to prosecute the war on corruption will bring elements like Ehindero and his co-looters to justice.

Corrupt enrichment by successive heads of the Nigeria Police undermines the ability to combat crime and other vices. Since money belonging to the police purse is usually embezzled, morale amongst the rank and file often ebbs. The Nigeria Police lack modern equipments, regular training and cannot stand with shoulder with police in other nations of the world.

High profile killings have remained unsolved following the inability of the Nigeria Police to effectively checkmate the criminals they pursue. The killing Justice Minister, Chief Bola Ige, Harry Marshal, Barister Agbeyegbe, notable Lagos politician, Funso Williams and lately and most recently the Chief Security Officer of the Governor of Ondo State, Tunde Awanebi remain shocking and embarrassing mysteries that may never be solved.
