The Super Falcons defeated South Africa on Sunday to win the women’s football event of the 9th All Africa Games here.
Nigeria won the one-sided final 4-0 to retain the gold medal it won four years ago on home soil.
Although Banyana Banyana had held the Nigeria girls to a two-all draw in their first meeting in the first round, the Falcons turned on the style on Sunday and were much too strong for the South Africans.
The Nigerians, who had defeated the hosts 5-0 in the semifinals, started Sunday’s goals rush early on, scoring three goals before the break.
Ifeanyi Chiejine, who has been in fine scoring form here, scored the first goal, before Vera Okolo and Perpetua Nkwocha ensured the Falcons took a healthy advantage into half-time.
The Falcons, apparently sure that there was no way back for the South Africans, eased off a little in the second half. But the Nigerians still had enough in the tank for a fourth goal to humiliate the South Africans.

Chiejine completed her brace and the rout with her team’s fourth goal seven minutes after the hour mark.
The Falcons players and officials have fulfilled their promise to win the gold medal in style after they had to come from behind to draw the opening game with, incidentally, the same South African team.
Damola Osayemi won the women’s 200m gold on Sunday as Nigeria made a desperate effort to shoot up the medals table.
She had earlier won the 100m event. Vivian Chukwuemeka won the women’s shot put gold while the men’s 4x100m team also won gold.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s men lost the basketball gold to Senegal on Sunday, falling 60-54 to their West African rivals in the final.
