Wakirike ethic nationality survival organisation
(WENSO) has accused the federal government of plotting
to provoke fresh outbreak of war in the Niger Delta
region.
this comes against the backdrop of last week's visit
by armed soldiers to Okchiri, the strongbase of the
leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante, Ateke Tom.
the soldiers allegedly visited the Okrika home of
Ateke Tom to fish out those responsible for an attack
on Naval personnel along Bonny Waterways.
the president of WENSO, Akuma Obianga, said its quite
unfortunate that their people are being accused of
renewed attacks on military personnel and oil
facilities when they have decided to embrace peace.
Meanwhile people of the Niger Delta region are still
aggrieved over the federal government's budget of 444
billion naira for security in the area.
the people feel government is more concerned with
protecting its economic interests than ensuring
development of the area.
they have also frowned at last week's military
exercises in Niger State which they believe are part
of a grand plot to position the military for attacks
on their communities.
in another development, people of the Niger Delta area
have expressed displeasure at the federal government's
refusal to grant amnesty to militants in the area who
have renounced and embraced peace.
this is fulfilment of an agreement reached with
government for the militants to halt attacks on
military personnel and oil faciltiies and embrace
total peace in turn for amnesty.
people of the Niger Delta feel the federal
government's refusal to grant amnesty to the militants
who have renounced might not spell good fortunes for
peace programmes in the region.
