AFENIFERE LEADER LINKS ATTACK TO HIRED ASSASINS
 |
Chief Fasonranti |
The recent attack bloody attack on the leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural main stream organization, Afenifere, Chief Reuben F. Fasonranti may have been carried out by contract killers. Pointblanknews.com investigations revealed that the style of operation and the kind of questions asked from Chief Fasonranti by the bandits suggested that the operation may have purely been aimed at killing the octogenarian statesman.
Pointblanknews.com spoke with Chief Fasonranti who is presently recuperating from head injuries sustained during the attack. He declared that “they possibly were hired killers. They did not ask me for money and they did not remove anything and they did not even state their mission.” He was not specific on the kinds of questions asked by his assailants but there are serious suspicion that the attack may have been fuelled by the lingering division within Afenifere whose chief ideologue, the late Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Nigeria, Chief Bola Ige, was murdered in December 2001; Ige’s killers are still at large.
Another possible motive for Chief Fasonranti’s attack said a close source who asked not to be identified could be related to his principled objections to an attempt made by “some impostors,” who have no royal blood, to “usurp,” the stool of the Deji of Akure Land. The hitherto vacant stool of the Deji of Akure has been filled with a substantive King, Oba Oludare Adesina. The source explained that the bad blood generated during the fierce contest for the stool may not have cleared.
Chief Fasonranti dismissed an attempt to link the Governor of the state, Dr. Segun Agagu to the attack saying “I have no quarrel with him and there is no way anybody would do such a dastardly thing to someone that has no known issues with him. There is no bad blood between me and Agagu.” He promised that a thorough job is being done to apprehend the hoodlums and that “we shall get them, I promise you.”
Unidentified assailants had stormed the Akure home of the acting Chairman of the Pan-Yoruba group, and inflicted serious cuts on his head and some parts of his body. His daughter was also attacked.
