Vogts release 37 Eagles for Uganda encounter

The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has released a list of 37 Super Eagles players selected by newly appointed team manager, Berti Vogts, for the African Nations Cup qualifier against the Cranes of Uganda on March 24 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

A statement issued in Abuja yesterday and signed by Tunde Aderibigbe, the special assistant to the NFA chairman, did not indicate where the players are to be camped, but said the players should report to camp on Monday, March 19 just as the German tactician would be assisted by former handler, Austine Eguavoen.

The invited players are goalkeepers Vincent Enyeama (Tel Aviv), Dele Aiyenugba (Enyimba), Austin Ejide (Bastia of France), Greg Etafia (Swallows FC, South Africa) and Carl Ikeme (Wolvehampton Wanderers of England).

Midfielders are Ayila Yusuf (Dynamo Kiev, Russia), Oguchi Uche (Lobi Stars FC, Nigeria), Sani Kaita (Sparta Rotterdam, Holland), Mikel Obi ( Chelsea, England), Obodo Christian ( Udinese, Italy) Utaka John ( Rennes, France), Paul Obiefule ( Viborg, Norway), and Olofinjana Seyi (Wolves Hampton Wanderers, England).

Uganda will be tough, Odegbami predicts

Former Green Eagles attacker, Chief Segun Odegbami, has predicted a tough outing for the Super Eagles against Uganda in the 2008 Nations Cup qualifier billed for MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta on March 24.

The ex-international expressed deep concern at the poor preparation of the Eagles towards the game, as he told Brila FM that if Super Eagles don’t reposition themselves for that crucial game, they would suffer yet another defeat.

"For me, if any Nigerian thinks that the Super Eagles would have an easy ride over the Cranes of Uganda in the Cup qualifier campaign, billed for March 24 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, we had better have a rethink.

"This game is going to be a very tough one for the Super Eagles. If the new technical adviser or whoever is leading the team present the same squad that played the Black Stars of Ghana in that disgraceful outing in London, then we are in for another disaster," he said.

"Personally, I know that we don’t have a team yet in the Super Eagles. The present crops of Super Eagles player as we have them now have lost their form. What we have in the Super Eagles are talented individual players, but when it comes to team work, we are far from it. I think the technical crews have a great work to do here if we are to achieve any positive result.

"It is very important to overhaul the national team now, because at this level, we should be looking beyond the Nations Cup. Some of those bad players who are currently making Eagles list should not be invited this time round. There is need for them to try other players. And Eagles must be together for least two weeks before that match. Because if you watch that game played in London, you will discover that the players were just playing individualistic football.

"Finally, they should beef up our defence because Joseph Yobo and cohort have failed us. The Cranes of Uganda won’t be an easy team to beat. They should remember that whenever any team in the continent wants to play the Super Eagles, the story is always different," he said.
