NIGERIA: MILITARY TASKFORCE RESCUES HOSTAGES BY UDUMA MBA, HEAD, LAGOS BUREAU.

The joint military Task force in the Niger Delta hasrescued three expatriate workers abducted by Niger Delta militants at a bar in Rumuolumeni, outskirts of Port Harcourt in Southern zone of Nigeria.

The workers, who are of European origin, were taken at gunpoint recently while relaxing at a bar after working hours.

The spokesman of the military taskforce, Mohammed Sagir, told newsmen in Port Harcourt, that the kidnappers were taken by surprise by a detachment of military men at their hideout in the Niger Delta creeks.

Sagir also said the size of the military personnel and superior fire power ensured a successful operation meant they had little or no resistance from the militants.

KIDNAP THREAT: CHINESE FIRM ABANDONS PORT HARCOURT STADIUM PROJECT

The Chinese firm handling the expansion of the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria, has abandoned its work site over threats of kidnap.

Niger Delta militants had allegedly written to the firm’s workers to stop work and return to their country or face the risk of being kidnapped.

This has resulted in the stadium project being abandoned and the September, 2007, deadline for completion looks unrealistic.

The project would have resulted in the expansion of the Liberation Stadium to a 30,000 capacity stadium from its present 20,000 capacity.
