PRESS RELEASE
PRONACO SET FOR MORE POSITIVE ACTIONS
The Chief Anthony Enahoro led Pro National Conference Organisation; PRONACO has alerted the nation of a busy schedule of democratic actions for the Nigerian people in the year 2009
The coalition which produced a new draft constitution for Nigeria in August 2006 has said the year 2009 will be a defining period in the annals of proactive activism as it is set to facilitate the historic 2nd national political summit that is expected to usher in a new Nigeria, where the voices of the people would take precedence.
Reviewing the state of Nigeria in Lagos on Wednesday, Mr Olawale Okunniyi, spokesman of PRONACO said the group is poised to shake the country once again and save it from rapacious and inept political class, who are bent on holding the people hostage.
PRONACO therefore plans to mobilise all voices and stakeholders into the 2 nd national political summit holding between January and February 2009 to bring about more pungent actions for national salvation, Okunniyi said
“Nigerians are definitely going to be kept busy in all the 18 regions adopted by PRONACO in the coming year, if we must recover the country from the hands of self serving and bankrupt leaders, who have hitherto, impoverished the people and held them to ransom
Once more, through a combination of actions, the people shall be encouraged to free themselves and take back their rights and heritage. More progressive actions shall be initiated by our leadership and we shall not cease to engage governments to make them accountable at all levels”
The group again warned the national assembly against a shoddy and erroneous constitutional review procedure as this, according to PRONACO, may heighten the contradictions and tensions in the country.
"The reform process could become an entry point to national recovery, if the national assembly can take a cue from the PRONACO process by adopting a popular template for national consultations.
It is our considered view that the review of the constitution based on the provisions of section 9 of the 1999 constitution would be a mishap and a spoiler as the section merely recommended the panel beating of the deeply flawed constitution"
If the national assembly is pro people, the provisions of the enabling section 9 should be amended to allow for a review that can be legitimately driven by the natural building blocks of the entity called Nigeria, the group counselled
Okunniyi stated that the Citizens’ Advocacy Group, a new front for PRONACO agenda, is nevertheless poised to interface with the national assembly joint committee on constitution review on the best procedures and template for achieving a peoples’ constitution for Nigeria
