ACTIVISTS PROBE POLITICAL KILLINGS IN OGUN, EKITI
A veteran political activist in the country and spokesman of Pro National Conference Organisation, PRONACO, Mr Wale Okunniyi has condemned the new wave of political killings in Ogun and Ekiti states.
Reacting to the coldblooded murder of Mr Kehinde Fasuba of Ekiti state PDP and two PDP youths in Ijebu North, Ogun state in Lagos on Tuesday, Okunniyi said “panicky and gangster politics will only diminish the monuments of the region’s political ideologues and forerunners”
He also warned the leadership of the PDP in the southwest to quickly set its house in order by putting an end to the insurgence of reckless political elimination and the ungodly penchant for turning political power against poor and defenceless people even within the same party.
Okunniyi, who spoke at the end a briefing by some youth groups in the southwest, who are protesting political violence in their states, also decried as political madness the murder of a council official in Ijebu East of Ogun state, Mr Tunde Fajengbesi, who was assassinated in Sagamu, Ogun state on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen.
The Southwest, in theory, is too advanced for the mindless and brutal politics bandied in the last one week by politicians and that the developments call for urgent x-ray to detect the root cause and nip in the bud the new political insanity, Okunniyi charged
“The situation calls for a thorough probe by Yoruba ideologues and intellectuals before it gets out of hand , in the build up to 2011 and we shall be willing to assist in that regard in the interest of the masses, who bear the brunt of these senseless power schemes”
“I think the people themselves will have to be encouraged, in line with the southwest tradition, to rise against these self serving political predators before they completely squander the stability and progress made by the region ”
Okunniyi however, assured the delegation that a tactical team from the pro democracy community will be encouraged to visit the two states on a fact finding mission by next week to prevent further degeneration of the situation.
