Enahoro, top politicians meet in Lagos, warns Yar’ Adua
Proponents of mega party have announced that they will meet again on Tuesday in Lagos even as they disclosed that they have uncovered a deeply contrived plot of the Nigerian presidency to discredit and destabilise their effort to form a granite coalition under the leadership of Elder statesman Anthony Enahoro.
Briefing newsmen yesterday in Lagos, the group head of secretariat, Mr Olawale Okunniyi, said plans have been concluded by eminent Nigerians to forward an alternative private bill on electoral reform to the national assembly.
According to him the Tuesday session of the group will witness the adoption of a draft memo on the strategic plan, principles and manifesto of the new movement as well as the formal endorsement of the ongoing collection of 20million signatures for popular electoral reform by civil society groups in Nigeria
The group also alleged the presidency of using graft blackmail and patronage to recruit powerful hatchet men and political jobbers to destabilise its initiative towards a new democratic order
“These hatchet men, irrespective of their party affiliations, have been recruited and directed to ensure that president Yar’ adua is returned at all cost for the second term. The team, an underground hatchet clique, is therefore expected to do anything under the sun to deliver the presidency back to Yar'adua.
Involved in this surreptitious move is a serving governor in the north, a top politician from the southwest, the chairman of a leading political party in the country, a former presidential candidate from the North, some dubious characters parading themselves as Chairmen of mushroom/one man political parties”
Okunniyi said the game plan of the sinister move is to set up a divisive process of forming mega party to confuse Nigerians and tacitly create a ground for Yar adua’s re election in spite of his administration non performance.
The team, according to him, has been briefed and fully mobilised notwithstanding the lip ban placed on second term campaigners by president Yar adua during the last PDP convention . “ That is why the PDP Chairman and its publicity secretary have suddenly become jittery at our sudden intervention; making sporadic statements”
Another mercenary ploy of these jobbers according to the group is the preposterous call, by the undertakers of some mushroom parties in Benin last week, “for ‘mega revolution’ (whatever that means) in place of a mega party trying to mislead unsuspecting Nigerians. What they fail to realise is that a revolutionary vanguard or party is the first imperative of any ‘mega revolution’ to guide and harness the success of the revolution”
The group however cautioned the detractors in PDP and their surrogates in other parties “whose survival depend on government patronage and INEC grants” to consider the survival of democracy and the peoples’ welfare rather than engage in divisive venture and conspiracy against the people.
