PRESS STATEMENT
Electoral Reform our main agenda for now – Mega Party
Proponents of the much sought about mega party have restated their resolve to pursue popular electoral reform as their main programme for the first phase of their struggle to rid the country of mal governance.
Although they said enthroning a responsive government by forming a credible mega party is their ultimate goal, they would like to first clear the hurdles posed to credible elections in their march towards formalizing the party; so as to make their current initiative and future elections in the country meaningful.
Briefing journalists in Lagos on Monday Mr Olubori Obafemi, a secretariat spokesperson said the movement is driven by objective situation and therefore intends to be more painstakingly focused on clearing the hurdles created in the polity by flawed constitution/electoral system for now in order to checkmate elections riggers and making the peoples’ vote count.
To this end, Obafemi said the group will meet again on Wednesday in Lagos under the leadership of Chief Anthony Enahoro to perfect its electoral reform plans for May 29 and June 12, 2009 in Abuja and Lagos respectively as an alternative electoral reform bill is expected to emerge from these events.
He also disclosed the group’s empathy for those he called political reactionaries sponsored to run down the new initiative in the media. Obafemi said their case has been settled before making the movement public. He said it is therefore cheering to note that Nigerians are already aware of their common antics to get patronage and public attention.
“So this great movement is not moved by the tantrums of characters like Tanko Yakasai, Junaid Mohammed, Olapade Agoro, Isa Kachako, political grousers, who analyze this new initiative based on petty differences with some members of the proposed party. They are only being reactionary and beclouded by emotions”
He said to rate membership of the new movement based on past flawed elections in the country or non possession of stolen funds will amount to double speak, myopia and crisis of perspective. According to him the Obama victory strategy in the United States has clearly demolished that argument.
The new movement has consciously enlisted credible leaders based on ideological resources and synergy to overthrow the present decadent and corrupt system in the country and not whether they are politicians or activists, rich or poor, young or old, men or women. Political astuteness to the people’s agenda is the key to membership of the movement, Obafemi declared
He concluded by saying the doors of the movement are still open to all Nigerians who believe that the country must be rid of electoral corruption and anti peoples’ governance.
Signed
Olubori Obafemi
