HON ABIYE DAVIES PROMISES TO UPHOLD CHILD RIGHTS
… Call on misled youth’s to embrace government peace initiative
The Executive Chairman of Degema local government area, Hon. Abiye Davies, has once again reiterated the need for Nigerians to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity.
Hon. Davies, who stated this today at Degema, headquarters of the Degema local government area, during this year’s Children’s Day Celebration opined that children are most vulnerable when there is lack of essentials like food, water, sanitation and health care, stressed on the need for parents to take issues relating to their children seriously.
The Council Boss who asserted that his administration has continued to appeal to parents and guardians to enroll their children/wards in school and ensure retention and completion of basic education, full immunization of children and advocated for the rights of the, promised to fully implement the Child Rights Bill before the Rivers State House of Assembly which is aimed at addressing the issue of the survival, development,protection and participation of the Nigerian Child in national issues whenever it is passed into law.
He therefore called on the people to expose any form of violence and sexual exploitation against children and always uphold the rights of the Nigerian child.
According to the Council Boss, in order to encourage reading culture in schools his Council in collaboration with the NYSC, has organized a Spelling Bee competition among secondary schools in the area, and has released two outboard engine boats, one each to Bakana and Tombia communities to ameliorate the hardship experienced by commuters with an order to transport teachers and health workers free.
He used the occasion to commend youths who has embraced the peace initiative of government by dropping their arms and called on those who are yet to do so, to emulate them to drop their arms, and embrace the state government efforts to reintegrate them into society and engage in legitimate means of livelihood.
Highlight of the occasion was the cutting of the Children’s Day cake by the chairman and his wife, presentation of awards to the winning schools and presentation of educational materials by the wife of the chairman, Mrs. Ibinungu Davies.
